Dear GR,

I recently received the following hot match:

My relative:

Cecil Bell, Born 1903 in Loma Loma, Fiji

The hot match sent to me:

Cecil Bell, born 1910 in Southampton.

So other than the same name, no match in the year of birth or place of birth.

Obviously lots of other people get matches similiar to the above situation (I am assuming!)

Can you please advise exactly what criteria GR basis it's hot matches on, it can't just be the name surely? If it is could this be made a bit clearer?

My understanding was that HM's use Name, Year of Birth and Place of Birth, however this is clearly not what has happened with the example above.

There have been ongoing uncertainties over how HM's are working since the end of 2010 and it is time for some explanation as to what is really going on.

I normally don't even look at so-called Hot Matches. They're so ridiculous.
Just had a quick look at mine.
An example:
My tree:
Elizabeth Bean 1829 Eston, Yorkshire.
They matched with:
Elizabeth Bean 1859, Stannington, Northumberland.

there quite obviously is something badly wrong with the Hot Match system

I have not paid attention to them for several years ................ most of them are actually because I shared information with other people in earlier years, and they have shared with others, who may or may not actually be related to me.

so I am the source of the information!

BUT I have noticed the incredible mis-matches!

at least 2 of the criteria match on this one :-D

Mary Smith 1779 Worksop, Nottinghamshire

Mary Smith 1779 Launton, Oxfordshire

In fact, most of the "new" HM's that I have seem to match on name and age ...... but not geographically!

so not as dramatic as your examples!

I can't be bothered with them!

Oh, c'mon, Estelle, are you suggesting that Gr doesn't know about the problems with hot matches? It's been complained about for years.

Hi Margee, we like to treat each member as an individual. We would always encourage people to contact our support team so that we can help them.

We are aware that Hot Matches aren't always accurate but we are working a new system at the moment.

Thank you for posting here, Estelle, after I told you in facebook about the thread.

AREN'T ALWAYS ACCURATE? How about hardly ever accurate?
I'm sure the support team would not appreciate a contact from me listing all of the inaccuracies in my Hot Matches. It would be like reading "War & Peace"
No, I just ignore them.

That is why members call them the 'NOT Matches'!

Well I received a reply:

Dear Rachelle

Thanks for your email.

At the moment we just match the name and year of birth. However, we are planning some changes to the way system works in the future and will be adding in the place of birth as a match. This will be added to the site in the coming months.

As you scroll around your tree we also offer matches with names. So in the meantime you might find this useful. If you click on the match with the name in your tree this will take you to the results where you can see if you have this relation in common with another member.

However, I have made a note of your suggestion and will pass it on to our development team. Please let me know if you need any further help. Kind Regards,

Lisa

It was nice of them to reply, however they didn't explain how the example I gave them would have occurred. Not sure if I should follow it up further or let it go? I've been a member for a long time, so I know how the tree matches work ....

What's your opinion

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 8 Jan 2012 21:50

Grace

I've given up on Hot Matches .................. a long time ago

I think you might well get better results by using Search Trees

Hot Matches will always be a problem for GR to handle correctly, because people use so many different criteria for the geographical place of birth

hot match:

Cecil Bell, Born 1903 in Loma Loma, Fiji

Cecil Bell, born 1910 in Southampton.

My opinion - that your question was not answered.
