How do you know that the marriage to Arthur Rye was not her first marriage

Have you any evidence to suggest that she was married before? Having a son proves nothing............

My Dads birth certificate had onunder his mothers name formally Weford. Naive just assumed she was married and had had my Uncle George. You can see that I am new to this

Formerly Welford means that was her maiden name. If she had been married before it would say something like " formerly Welford, late *****"

where ***** would be her previous husband's surname.
