Ben, boy Emma definitely took it to the extremes in burying the fact. If David Obey was the father (carpenter), then she used his surname as her maiden name and used a fake first name and her actual maiden name as the father's--brilliant!

I would try and obtain copies of the children's marriage and/or death records just to see what was stated on records later in life--did they ever know the truth?

If Emma was trying to hide the fact she could have used any name on the census in 1841.

Good luck!

Hi Joan

Yes I do see your point. She gave her status as widowed to cover up in 1851 and 1861. I also believe that Emma is my 4xgreat grandmother.

She could have used any name, yes, so I might have to look into that.

Obey is not a common surname. David Obey was one of the very few Obey's in London in the 1840s.

Reason is because her parents are my supposed 4xgreat grandparents but they could be my 5xgreat grandparents as my 3xgreat gran Clara Emma Auber was born in December 1835, and baptised as daughter of John & Elizabeth Auber, Emma's parents. But, Elizabeth would have been 51. Not impossible but she had her previous child in 1827.

I am wondering if Clara was Emma's first child, as both her and Emma are missing in 1841. I do wonder if they were together as I cannot locate Clara either who'd have been 5. Clara's middle name of Emma is a bit of a hint as well wouldnt you agree? I should have mentioned this before but wonder if Clara was a firstborn. What are your thoughts Joan?
