Louisa Arnold b1879 Greenwich is my great grandmother. She married Robert Clark in 1896, my grandad was born 1903. My great aunt Rose was born in 1912 and we had always assumed she was a Clark too but her birth certificate says Rose DAVID, father Stephen DAVID. I found a marriage of Louisa Clark to Stephen David in 1907. Louisa later married Albert Lowe in 1917 and I have details of the Lowe children also.

I have searched in vain to find Louisa, Stephen or my grandad, also Robert and his elder brother George (also known as Harry) on the 1911 census. I have found them on earlier census. I can't find a death for Stephen David either.

Since you good people have managed to find census and other entries where others had given up, I wondered if anyone would have better luck than I !

Thanks in anticipation!

Yes - that's the only one for Rose and with mother Arnold in 1912 that I could find.

Gai

Gai Report 30 Aug 2009 21:12

It is that record that indicated Rose was not a Clark but a DAVID.

Just re-read my original post and don't want to confuse. I have found Louisa, Robert Clark (first husband) and George on 1901. Obviously Robert (1903) wasn't there(!). I can't find any of them on 1911.

The Robert Clark she married in 1896 was Robert H, his father was Henry Hutchinson Clark.

Just had to double check myself - and just noticed she gave previous name as Clark, not David (!) Didn't notice earlier because I found her marriage before I knew great aunt Rose was not a Clark!! curiouser and curiouser!

Gai Report 30 Aug 2009 21:38

Ok - you beat me to it !!!

BUT the birth cert for Rose is definitely the right one so Lousia should have been a David.

Could this be your grandad?

HOUSEHOLD CLARK ROBERT EDWARD M 1904 7 Camberwell London

1911 specified with Robert Edward in the household

HOUSEHOLD CLARK EDWARD T M 1891 20 Camberwell London
HOUSEHOLD CLARK EDWARD T M 1862 49 Camberwell London
HOUSEHOLD CLARK LOUISA F 1879 32 Camberwell London
HOUSEHOLD CLARK MARY ANN F 1862 49 Camberwell London
HOUSEHOLD CLARK ROBERT EDWARD M 1880 31 Camberwell London
HOUSEHOLD CLARK ROBERT EDWARD M 1904 7 Camberwell London

As it's a common name they may not be all from the same family or the correct family

Have you found a death for Stephen between Rose's birth and Louisa's remarriage?

I am wondering if she actually married Rose's father.

LiverBird1

LiverBird1 Report 30 Aug 2009 21:47

Yes I thought she should be under David, but my sister married twice on 2nd marriage she used our family name not ex husband's name.

Couldn't find any David family specified living with Clark in Camberwell, that is if that's them.

Gosh - you are all so quick!

Liverbird - I guess she may have used Clark if Rose was being "considered" a Clark along with her two older brothers

rootgatherer - I can't find a death but I thought I had found the marriage of Louisa to Stephen David in 1907.

Clark is usually spelt without the E but I have found it spelt both ways on records - I don't think they were particuarly literate!

Thanks Cassy - that makes two of us!

I've only picked up my research since I got subscription for 1911 for my b'day so I'm having to double check my earlier notes and I've ended up doubting myself about the David/Arnold marriage BUT the bith cert for Rose is correct (I don't have copy here - Mum has it). Great Aunt Rose is still alive - in her very late nineties - but deaf and doesn't remember anything anyway! The Lowe marriage is most definately right - but that's later anyway.

Oh well - I would only have been ironing this evening anyway!

Thanks again - Gai

If the 1911 census posted is the correct one, and Mr Clark had a middle name then I can't see an obvious death for him either! Had a quick look on the National Archives website and don't see a divorce for him and Louisa either!!

Did Rose'e birth certificate give her father's name as Stephen David? Oh! if only they had been Scots! The birth certificates up here give the date and place of the parents' marriage. If they are unmarried and the child is being given the father's surname then both parents need to be present to sign the register. It really is quite helpful!!
