Find Ancestors

My Grandfather Clifford Robinson claimed his parents were Sarah Robinson and Spencer Robinson yet when I checked his birth certificate it say's father unknown.
I have looked for Spencer Robinson and found he was born in 1871, Skipton and married Amelia Smith. Is there anyway I can check that Spencer was my gt grandfather

Not without a DNA I suspect !

Seriously though, if there is no father on the cert you can't really PROVE who the father was.
You may be lucky if you check his christening............I've seen "father named as Joe Bloggs of timbucktoo" written in the records

Fathers' names were often invented by illegitimate children - a matter of shame.

Clifford was born in 1913, Skipton. They all lived at the same address including Spencer.

1901 census has a Spencer Robinson, born 1871 in Burnley - living in Skipton, with a wife named Sarah.

Her name was previously Scott .

It would therefore seem that Sarah had an extra-marital relationship which produced Clifford

EDIT - Clearly not the same Sarah, based on 1911 (below)

Could you give the birth reg'n record details, please

The only one I can see in Skipton is 1910

Date?
Mother? ( both names if there's more than one)

So Sarah died before 1911 yet she had Clifford 1913,or if it was 1910 where is he in 1911?

I am confused now. Cliffords father Spencer, born 1871, married a lady named Amelia Smith.
I have Spencers mother named as Sarah Robinson and not his wife.
I think I am confusing the situation!!!

I have a bit of info from previous but not as much as what I have rec'd today. I never realised Spencer was a widow. It looks lilke Amelia Smith was his housekeeper and he obviously got together with her.. So was Clifford Amelia's son or someone else's? Talk about frustration

We need from you the FULL details of Clifford's birth.

So - are you now saying you DON'T have his birth cert?

And you can't say Spencer was his father without PROOF

Please look again at Clifford's birth certificate and tell us exactly when and where he was born.
Are you sure that Spencer was born @ 1871 in burnley as there were others born around the Skipton area.

You say they were all living together at the same address,when and where was this.

Oh my word I am so rubbish at this. Sorry to you all for the confusion!
I shall speak with my father over the weekend and get as much detail as I can. Clifford was my fathers dad so he may know more.
As soon as I get the info I shall be back on this forum asking for your help again (don't bother I hear you sall say). Seriously though I really do appreciate everyones help and responses.

How can you have Spencer's mother named as Sarah Robinson.... are you saying you have his birth cert too ?

Why are you holding back information from Clifford's birth certificate when it could help find the answers to your question ?

You'll have to be a bit more co-operative or you'll find the helpers will lose patience and move on to help someone else instead.

Please just clear up one point for us - do you have Clifford's birth cert? Or not..........that's all we need to know at the moment

I suspect that your reference to 'no father's name' was actually about Clifford's marriage cert.....is that correct?
