Look up and advice Please

Looking for advice on how to obtain more info on a Private Edward Powell aged 26 of the Royal Marines, who drowned in the River Medway Chatham on the 16th April 1878 who fell from his ship HMS Fox.

I have the inquest reports from two local papers, plus info from the archives :- ADM 157/286/238

Folios 238-242. Edward Powell, born Monmouthshire, Scotland. Attestation papers to serve in the Royal Marines at Plymouth 1875 (when aged 23). Discharged 1878 as Dead.

Edward Powell, born Monmouthshire, Scotland, must have been copied down wrong?

I am going to send off to the Archive to get copies of the info that they have on him, in the mean time I am looking for info on where he was born, was he married, next of kin, census, ect
Thanks
Charles

Not sure what information you are after..

There are literally hundreds of Edward Powells...far to many to guess at which is yours

If he was born in Scotland then you should find his birth cert. at Scotlandspeople.

What do you already know about him?

Parents names? brothers, sisters?...you must have some information to have him in your tree.

Add to the thread what you already have, then prehaps we can help you.

Think this may be his death cert. registeration.

Deaths Jun 1878 (>99%)

Powell Edward 26 Medway 2a 282

EDIT..just checked Scotlandspeople..there was no Edward Powell birth registered between 1860 and 1863....

Hi
yes I have his d/cert,
there is no info that helps, as the death was reported by the coroner, the two newspaper clipings tell how he died,
name and rank, no personel info except age.
I am fishing in the dark, my g/m Ellen Powell was born in Chatham Kent acording to the 1901/1911 census but there are no records for her birth,(in Chatham Reg or Southport) I have her M/cert that says that her father Edward Powell was deseased in 1893 I also have her death cert. Edward Powell was born about 1852

what I was hoping to do was to find him on the 1871 census to see if he was married just a stab in the dark

I think Charles means Edward's daughter married in 1893 and he was dead by then. It's a bit confusing though I agree.
Maybe you would care to answer the question re. Ellen's birth.

Hi Jan

Ellen Powell married William Mellor on 27 August 1893 age 20 witnesses J? Derbyshire, and Edith Emily? Smith. Ellen was living at 41 Clifford Street, Bootle, William was at 14 Clifford Street,
Ellen Powell was 27 in the 1901 census, 37 in 1911(only on original and her name was Helen this is the only time that her name was spelt with a H), aged 66 on death certificate 10 January 1940. I think she was born between March and August 1873. Ellen is my grandmother and you would think with all the info that I have, I should have found her birth details but I cannot pin it down.

Ok Charles.

Presume you don`t know if your grandmother had any siblings.?

I wonder if her thinking she was born in Chatham was a bit of a red herring.?

Her father died when she was 5...if he was in the Navy there was a good chance he may have been stationed in Chatham, she may have just presumed that was where she was born.....

Maybe her mother was from merseyside and thats why she was there when she married.

Have you done as address check in 1891 on the place they both married from in 1893...that may be a clue to family?

Hi Nicky
Q1 no siblings that I know of?
Q2 yes it might be a red herring, it has crossed my mind
Q3 that could be?
Q4 No, would like to, I asked the achive in Sefton (Bootle )for a check for 1893 but they said that they had no record for that year,
In the 1891 census there is a record that is what you would exspect to find if you work backdown from 1911 census but the name is Ellen Burn(s)

Someone with a findmypast subscription can look up who was at 14 and 41 Clifford street in 1891....both addresses come up, but my subs run out so i can`t check it for you, i only have 1911 census access on there now.

Have found the census entry for Ellen Burn......but i think it in fact says Powell if you look closely at the image. Has anyone else looked at it....?

That is not the address she married from however...its Cyprus Road, so still may be worth finding out who was at 14 and 41 Clifford Street in 1891.
