Well one of the problems is that St Olave isn't in Middlesex. During the 1800s there's a St Olave in Surrey under the registration district of Southwark. Also one in Exeter, Devon, and one in Yorkshire.

Now the interesting thing is when looking up censuses for Forward in St Olave, Surrey is that a lot of them came from Devon.

Can't help you any further than that as there is no Robert. Looks like there may have been a name change here, especially as you can't find him coming in to Canada.

This definately would be the right age to be our Robert's father but no son in the 41 census or 51 census and he was supposed to be born in 1836-39. He died in1904

Have a look on FMP to see if his Army discharge papers are on there. If not, you have to know which Regiment he was in to establish from other Army Records when he was sent to Canada. Does the marraige record only say Foot Guards or is there a number before the word Foot which would indicate his regiment?

Evelyn

Evelyn Report 22 Sep 2010 14:41

It says he was a corporal in Her Majestie's foot guards

Thanks Evelyn - they weren't very helpful then, were they?!

If he got an Army pension there are ways of tracking down his regiment (a bit complicated!)and from there you could trace his movements including when he arrived in Canada.

Have you looked on FindmyPast to see if there's an Army record for him? If not, then it would have to be a search of Muster Rolls for the Scots Guards at the National Archives to see if he is listed with them(assuming the Muster Rolls have survived)

The Coldstream Guards are the ones known as Her Majesty's Foot Guards.

from Wikipedia
The Foot Guards are the Infantry regiments of the Household Division of the British Army. There have been six regiments of foot guards, five of which still exist. The Machine Gun Guards, which was formed during the First World War, was disbanded in 1920:
Grenadier Guards
Coldstream Guards
Scots Guards
Irish Guards
Welsh Guards
Guards Machine Gun Regiment ("Machine Gun Guards")

When you Google Her Majesty's Guards it is the Coldstream Guards that turn up. Although I don't think they were in Canada.

There is a difference between Foot Guards and Regiments of Foot.
