Looks as though the Grenadier Guards is the other possibility then Ozi - thanks for the info.

I think you could be right about the Scots, Annie.

The Trent Affair is fascinating reading. I'd never heard of it before but I guess the Canadians have.

11,500 troops were sent to Canada during the American Civil War to guard the Canadian border. The Trent Affair was when a British steamer was boarded and Confederate passengers were seized by the Union.

From the Rootsweb page "British Regiments in Canada".

Canada (present-day Ontario and Quebec) was reinforced by three battalions of infantry and a battery of field artillery during the summer of 1861. A long-standing goal of some Northern U.S. politicians was to add Canada to the Union. Thus there was a real concern that the Union Forces would move north after their anticipated quick victory over the Confederate States.

The Grenadier Guards (1st)
The 1st Battalion was sent to Canada at the time of the "Trent" difficulty, and remained three years. [It doesn't say where they were garrisoned.]

The Coldstream Guards (2nd)
The 2nd Battalion was in Canada 1838-42. [which rules them out.]

The Scots Fusilier Guards (3rd) (later The Scots Guards)
1862-64 Quebec
The 2nd Battalion was sent to Canada in 1861, returning to England in 1864.

Then there's all the Regiments of Foot, many of which were in Canada at the time.

Ozi

The article you quote from Wikipedia actually says that there were 6 Foot Guards Regiments. Welsh, Irish and Machine Gun Guards can be discounted, due to the date, so there are 3 possibilities. Coldstreams weren't in Canada and I don't believe Grenadier Guards were either, so that leave the Scots.

Ozibird Report 22 Sep 2010 21:55

The Coldstream Guards are the ones known as Her Majesty's Foot Guards.

from Wikipedia
The Foot Guards are the Infantry regiments of the Household Division of the British Army. There have been six regiments of foot guards, five of which still exist. The Machine Gun Guards, which was formed during the First World War, was disbanded in 1920:
Grenadier Guards
Coldstream Guards
Scots Guards
Irish Guards
Welsh Guards
Guards Machine Gun Regiment ("Machine Gun Guards")

When you Google Her Majesty's Guards it is the Coldstream Guards that turn up. Although I don't think they were in Canada.

There is a difference between Foot Guards and Regiments of Foot.

Have you looked on FindmyPast to see if there's an Army record for him? If not, then it would have to be a search of Muster Rolls for the Scots Guards at the National Archives to see if he is listed with them(assuming the Muster Rolls have survived)

Thanks Evelyn - they weren't very helpful then, were they?!

If he got an Army pension there are ways of tracking down his regiment (a bit complicated!)and from there you could trace his movements including when he arrived in Canada.

Have a look on FMP to see if his Army discharge papers are on there. If not, you have to know which Regiment he was in to establish from other Army Records when he was sent to Canada. Does the marraige record only say Foot Guards or is there a number before the word Foot which would indicate his regiment?

This definately would be the right age to be our Robert's father but no son in the 41 census or 51 census and he was supposed to be born in 1836-39. He died in1904
