Lorraine Report 28 Jan 2011 16:00

Hi
I am completely stuck as to where to look next!

My great great grandfather Francis George Boulton or George Francis as he was sometimes called on records was born around 1845 in Kensington. He married Ann Gibbs in 1866 & had children with Eleanor Silvester from 1873 who he eventually married in 1924, 4 years before he died.

His father acccording to one census was Charles Boulton.

His mother was Ann Boulton possibly Williams as I have them on one census with her as daughter & him as Grandson living with John & Mary Williams.

I can find no marriage for Ann Williams to a Charles Boulton & trying to find a birth for Francis/George with the correct parents is proving impossible.

I have a copy of Ann's obitury which has her son as informant for her death & this tells me that the 1851 census with them on must be the correct one but i have been unable to find a lead through his brother William George who is also on this census.

Ann then goes on to have 2 more children Harry & Mary Ann, Harry's birth cert has father unknown written on it but they are both born in the slough workhouse. Francis/George is living with Thomas Tuckey who is down as his uncle on 1861 census but there is no sign of William George.

I Have also been trying to find out about Thomas Tuckey as this may help work out how he is related. I do know that he married Elizabeth Williams but according to their marriage cert her fathers name is different to the parents for Ann on 1851 census.

I hope I haven't confused anyone as much as it is starting to confuse me.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated as I seem to have exhausted all previous leads.

By the way, looking at image for 1861 there is a Bolton family two doors down, not sure if relevant?? I'm not totally convinced the surname "Tuckey" is transcribed correctly.

Hi Jan

According to marriage cert neither have been married before but as i have his previous marriage cert I know this is not true.

His 1st marriage to Anne Gibbs was at St Peter's church in Hammersmith on 24/12/1866 & the 2nd was at Hammersmith Registry Office on 31/07/1924.

Father on both certs is named as Charles Boulton & occupation is Soldier deceased.

Thomas married Elizabeth Williams in 1845 in Kensington but I think she died in 1867. I have no idea where she would've been in 1851.

brummiejan Report 28 Jan 2011 18:20

Have you actually looked at the image 1851, because I have to say I'm not altogether convinced by the transcription.

What do you think of this for a possible birth?

Births Mar 1845 (>99%)
Boulton George Francis St Martin 1 124

Who are witnesses on both certs?

Don't think it really helps but this might be thomas 1841:

Hi Jan

I can't look at the image at the moment as it is on my memory stick & my son borrowed it.

I also have all my certs saved on the memory stick so can't check those either.

I agree with jan about the transcription of Tuckey

Looking carefully at other names on the page, I think it is me likely to eb TACKEY

But also

how sure are you that the Geo. Bolton shown as the nephew on that image is in fact YOUR Francis George Boulton?

Especially as there is a Geo. Bolton, wife and family, living only 2 doors away.

Sylvia, I don't think the first names for the two Boulton nephews1851 look like what the transcriber has put - what do you think?

EDIT Ok fair enough! original says uncle (I think!!):

Re: 1851 transcription. I would say it's Thomas Tuckey. The capital letter starting the surname is just about the same as that on Thomas and on the Tomlyn on the line below.

There is a James Lay a few lines above and that L is definitely an L.

If you look at the way the enumerator has written Fulham further down the page the "u" is the same as in the Tuckey surname.

FMP have transcribed the name as Tuckey.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Jan 2011 19:23

I thought it was a T

.......... but I'm not sure about "u" vs "a", when looking at the various ways "a" is written ... see Jane a couple of rows above.

Lorraine Report 28 Jan 2011 19:37

It is definately Tuckey as I have Thomas's marriage cert. What I am trying to work out is if like it says he is the uncle of my Francis/George than how is he related as if I can crack this one it might help with sorting out his parents.

I know that Ann Boulton (his mother) was on 1851 census with John & Mary Williams as their daughter.

Thomas Tuckey married an Elizabeth Williams.

The fathers of Elizabeth Williams & my Ann aren't the same. as Elizabeth's father is Francis Williams - a farmer & Ann's according to the 1851 census is John Williams - a shoemaker.

Its all very confusing

Lorraine

Lorraine Report 29 Jan 2011 13:33

Witnesses to Francis George Boulton & Anne Gibbs marriage were Thomas Tuckey & Eliza Collins so its definately Tuckey.

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 29 Jan 2011 15:51

How sure are you his mother was Ann? Have you now been able to check the image, I'm not sure about the sons' names.

Who were the witnesses on his other marriage cert?

Might be worth checking out that 1841 census too, there are a William and Mary Bolton living nearby, and a Bolton family on the next page.

I have his mothers obituary & he was the informant, it stated in the newspaper that she was his mother. His other marriage wasn't until 1924 so isn't any help.

He was living at 18 st james street hammersmith when she died, the same address he was living at when my great grandfather was born.
It says that she was the widow of Charles Boulton (deceased) a private in the Coldstream guards but can't find anything about him.

No idea if they are related, but thought it worth posting (even if just to eliminate):

Thanks Marie Celeste, anything is worth looking at as you never know if it might fit in somewhere along the line.

Have just reread Ann's obituary & it says that Charles Boulton was killed in the Crimea.

I have no idea where or when he was born but I did find a death for a George Boulton in Crimea in 1855. It isn't the right name but the way my Boulton's used their middle names instead of given names it wouldn't surprise me but I wouldn't presume anything without proof.

I can't find a marriage for a Charles Boulton to an Ann Williams so can only assume they never married. I am only looking for a marriage for her in this name as she was put down as daughter in 1851 census with the Williams family.

MarieCeleste Report 29 Jan 2011 17:41

Found this record:

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921

Name: Charles Edward Boulton
Spouse Name: Ann Horsley
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 06 Jan 1834
Parish: St John at Hackney
County: Middlesex
Borough: Hackney

Doesn't give any further info as it's a Banns record. These are likely the parents of the baptism I posted above.
