Hello,

My Gt, Gt Grandfather Arthur Percival was born around Aug 1868 in Salford Manchester, I know his father was called John Percival (not a clue what year or when he was born)

I cannot for the life of me find a birth record for Arthur - i keep coming back to Arthur John Percival who also lived in Salford, Barton upon Irwell.

Arthur P also is missing from 1871 and 1881 census' but is on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 ones in the rights places, seriously getting on my nerves now!

Pls help Thanks Emma

Flick Report 25 Feb 2011 22:27

Quite likely his birth wasn't registered....no penalties until 1875 for not doing so.

Could you delete the unnecessary crudity..................please.

Flick

Flick Report 25 Feb 2011 22:29

Presumably, the father's name came from Arthur's marriage cert......what was John's occupation? Or was he deceased?

Choccy Report 25 Feb 2011 22:48

The only 3 Arthur Percivals I can find on the 1911 don't seem to match. I was going to look and see if Arthur might have had a second name or initial.

The other Arthur you keep returning to is on 1911 with birth year 1870 and he had been married to Mary Jane for 15 years. From the info provided by Choccy, your Arthur married Charlotte Maria Bishop. So if you think this might be your Arthur you need to see if you can prove he had two wives ie when did Mary Jane die and he remarry.

There are lots of pages on the army pension record... I've never seen so much info on them before!
If it is the right one (and I hope it is) he had 4 children

Marriage to Charlotte Maria Bishop 15/8/97
Edith Grace 9/1 /98
Christopher Charles 21/1/00
William Arthur 26/6/01.....informant on death cert 26 Queens Rd, Ashley Down, Bristol
Sydney Frank 22/ 9/06?

His death certificate says he died 11 June 1942 aged 73 Army Pensioner in Bristol Royal Infirmary
address 28 Albany Road, Montpelier, Bristol

Possibly his Father was also in the army and Arthur was abroad with his parents in 1871 and 1881. One of Arthur's children was born in South Africa so this is quite likely to have happened.
So, occupation of Father John from Arthur's marriage certificate?
Thanks

Have you checked on Find My Past who was living at 24 Angel Street in 1891?

Hello all, thank you for the replies all the info you have found is fab and is the correct Arthur I have found this information already :-)

The marriage cert i have says that John Percival was deceased as the time of marriage 1897 and he profession was a 'Grocer'.

Arthur that married Mary Im sure is the wrong Arthur as that was Arthur John who's father is Peter. The one i'm trying to trace is Arthur whose father is John - I have this off the Army Records.

I'm thinking his birth was registered, which means i have no way of finding out John's date of birth or date of death or where he is buried??

I'm going to have a look on findmypast now as i have 25 free credits to use. Hopefully that will bring up something, otherwise i feel a bit stumped.

I really wanted to find John Percival's Grave as Ive a feeling its in Manchester somewhere, as I live in Mcr would love to go and visit it.

According to 1901 census he was Arthur P.

Emma Report 28 Feb 2011 08:30

Hi Guys, yep the Arthur i'm after is Arthur P Percival but still can't find a birth record for him. The 24 Angel Street is in Manchester as the above census with all the people on it, but he's not listed there. My husband said i really need to go to a Manchester Library and look up Angel Street as there were probably more than one! Ta Emma

Hi Cathy,

I dont have that record, from FindMyPast but i am aware of him, he was a child of Arthur P Percival. Thank you.

i'm gonna have to just order some birth certs and whichever one has John Percival on will be the right one, then i can find out where John was born and hopefully go from there.

Cathy

Cathy Report 28 Feb 2011 14:56

This is a possible death for John given that he was living at 24 Angel Street in 1888 but wasn't there in the 1891 Census and was deceased by 1897.
There is only one Angel Street in Manchester according to findmypast and when I googled Salford it looks like it could be the right registration district.
