Please could anyone help me i am trying to trace my great grandfather Alfred Payton born approx 1869 clerkenwell london i cant find anything prior to the 1901 census not even a birth record please can anyone suggest anything else i could try, many many thanks in anticipation

Hi thanks everyone, yes this is Alfred he was married to Louisa Fruish nee Tomkinson, Louisa was a widow previously married to Stephen Fruish (obviously Stephen is no relation to me), I have managed to trace Louisa and her parents and indeed grandparents, but am having no look with Alfred or his father Alfred very confusing, thanks again everyone Heather

I know this is so frustrating and i have no living relatives to question its as if alfred just appeared from nowhere i am so confused ??????????????????????

it looks to me like Alfred changed his own name as an adult since his marriage is the first time he appears under that name

maybe he was registered under his mother's surname if his parents were not married and Payton was his biological father's name and he decided to use it, there can be all kinds of reasons why people change their names

Hi HH, have you tried to find his baptism record in Clerkenwell ? It might tell you more information.

I see that he worked as a Conductor Bus. Perhaps, you could try to find his employee records to see what his details.

my great grandmother was fostered (or adopted) in 1889 and finally I found her baptism record in Ancestry few years ago. She used two surnames Allen (from her birth) and Rutherford by foster parents. The record shows her birth parents' names. However, I still could not find her birth certificate. Never give up.
