Find Ancestors

I wonder if someone would be kind enough to check this record on 1911 for me please. I know where this family were living in 1911 and all the names, places and dates of birth fit etc. The only problem is that their name should be Tomlinson. It was always Tomlinson before 1911 and after and on all records. I haven't seen the original page and I wondered if they could possibly have all been a guest of someone!! Or if the family above were named guest and the enumerator just kept putting ditto? A mistranscription of Guest from Tomlinson seems unlikely but would appreciate any suggestions.

They are living at 7 Victoria Street - Hucknall - Nottingham.

I have checked the original and the surname is Guest.

Also, 12 children born, all living

There is no one else in the house and the signature at the bottom is Walter Guest.

Are you sure about Tomlinson??
This is the same family in 1901 and 1891??

I got cut off from GR and I had just come back to apologise. I had been given the information from someone who I understood had already done the research. While I was cut off I have been double checking and realised the same thing.

It's all very odd actually. The marriage is understood to have been Dec 1883 in Rotherham - Walter Tomlinson to Lucy Ellen Walker. The later children at least have been registered under Tomlinson. I had better check the others. The person researching knew where this family lived and the addresses all fit this guest family. I couldn't find a birth for Walter Guest that fit either!!

I think I have a bit of detective work to do.

I don't usually take someones word for it but she has the family details and certs of recent years and knows where they were living etc.

For instance - Bertha Tomlinson married Thomas Johnson from the 1911 address in 1915. Ahhhhhhh just checked and the most likely birth is Bertha Guest.

It gets stranger and stranger. Think I need to ask some questions and start from scratch.

Well - the most likely birth for Agnes in Rotherham (says born Swinton in1891 which is under Rotherham) is in the name of Tomlinson.

Sorry Lynski, I meant that it said she was born Swinton in 1891 census. That birth was the one I thought looked the most likely.

That Hector birth is another one of the ones my friend knows about who married May Worral. That's what makes it so odd.

I am going to e-mail her and find out EXACTLY what she has as proof - i.e. certs etc. Something seems very odd. No point in goinf any further I don't think until I have checked a few things.

I have just received a bit more info re e-mail. From marriage certificate the father of Walter is given as Moses. Friend says that she found a Moses Tomlinson with son Walter in Leicester but I can't find them in 1861 or 1871. Possible death for a Moses Tomlinson in Ashby de la Zouch (Leicestershire) in March 1865. p.s. Have e-mailed back to ask Walters occupation.

The 1900's information she has given me all fits the Guest lot!!

Sorry, had to go and have my hair cut (itching now - bits everywhere :-D)

Other details from that cert i.e. ages, addresses and witnesses might also be useful.

Oh blimey - the plot thickens - thank you Dea. She is definitely Lucy Ellen on marriage cert and on Herbert birth cert on 18.10.1903.
Do you think we are following the wrong family.
Unfortunately the certs are all with her relative and she didn't take copies, only a few notes. So now have to wait for reply from relative.

p.s. I had to go to the dentists, so stop complaining about a few itchy hairs :-D :-D

I'm sure I have it right - I see a few certs coming on. Odd that she married in the same quarter and miles away from where Moses died, but it all fits with the census right through from 1861.
