I have a similar thing in my tree - my grandmother had a stepfather and when I was looking for her children (12 of them) I thought it was odd that I couldn't find all of them until I found out that, for each birth she swapped and changed her maiden name between her actual surname and her stepfather's surname??

She is no longer here for me to ask her but I often wonder why??

Christine2 Report 24 Jun 2011 09:44

That's right Lynski :-)
I will never understand though why he used the name Tomlinson on everything apart from all census.

p.s. 1871 is Guest on Ancestry.

For Dea and Lynski if they are looking in -

I have just worked it all out (sort of) lol :-)
Walter was born Tomlinson and his father was Moses, not for long though.

Jane Ann Holland born April-June 1839 – Ashby de la Zouch – ref 15 26
Marriage of Jane Ann Holland to Moses Tomlinson – Ashby de la zouch 7a 138

Birth Oct-Dec 1859 Walter Tomlinson - Ashby de la Z ref 7a 100

Moses Tomlinson Died Jan-March 1865 Ashby de la Zouch 7a 75

Jane (No Ann and still as Holland) married Samuel Guest – Jan-March 1865 Basford 7b 117

Edmund Guest born July-Sept 1867 Basford 7b 140

In 1871 Walter is now listed as Walter Guest.

I'm sure I have it right - I see a few certs coming on. Odd that she married in the same quarter and miles away from where Moses died, but it all fits with the census right through from 1861.

Phewwwwwww
Christine :-)

Oh blimey - the plot thickens - thank you Dea. She is definitely Lucy Ellen on marriage cert and on Herbert birth cert on 18.10.1903.
Do you think we are following the wrong family.
Unfortunately the certs are all with her relative and she didn't take copies, only a few notes. So now have to wait for reply from relative.

p.s. I had to go to the dentists, so stop complaining about a few itchy hairs :-D :-D

Sorry, had to go and have my hair cut (itching now - bits everywhere :-D)

Other details from that cert i.e. ages, addresses and witnesses might also be useful.

Thanks Dea - me too.

I have just received a bit more info re e-mail. From marriage certificate the father of Walter is given as Moses. Friend says that she found a Moses Tomlinson with son Walter in Leicester but I can't find them in 1861 or 1871. Possible death for a Moses Tomlinson in Ashby de la Zouch (Leicestershire) in March 1865. p.s. Have e-mailed back to ask Walters occupation.

The 1900's information she has given me all fits the Guest lot!!

Dea Report 22 Jun 2011 11:15

DO come back to us when you have some more details Christine - I am curious about this one!

Sorry Lynski, I meant that it said she was born Swinton in 1891 census. That birth was the one I thought looked the most likely.

That Hector birth is another one of the ones my friend knows about who married May Worral. That's what makes it so odd.

I am going to e-mail her and find out EXACTLY what she has as proof - i.e. certs etc. Something seems very odd. No point in goinf any further I don't think until I have checked a few things.

Thank you so much for your interest :-)

Did Walter die and Lucy re-marry to a Tomlinson I wonder?

Then the children took on his name?

I will take a look.

Christine2 Report 22 Jun 2011 10:54

Well - the most likely birth for Agnes in Rotherham (says born Swinton in1891 which is under Rotherham) is in the name of Tomlinson.

I think I need a lie down ;-) :-)

Christine2

Christine2 Report 22 Jun 2011 10:45

Apologies Dea - please see above.
I don't usually take someones word for it but she has the family details and certs of recent years and knows where they were living etc.

For instance - Bertha Tomlinson married Thomas Johnson from the 1911 address in 1915. Ahhhhhhh just checked and the most likely birth is Bertha Guest.

It gets stranger and stranger. Think I need to ask some questions and start from scratch.
