I am trying to find out who the parents of my grand mother was. She is Marion Chambers born about 1898. AT the Cottage of Contempt PH Winson Green Birmingham. Ive wondered what th PH stands for, I know there is a prison in Winson Green, it has been there for many years, I thought it may be prison hospital. I know My grandmother had a sister Lilly or LIllian. Could someone help me please, she married my grand father William Henry in 1921 Birminhgam. Sue

Hello Sue, have you ordered a copy of your grandparent's marriage certificate to see what (if any) details it gives for her father?

Is Chambers her married or maiden name? Is William Henry your grandfather's full name, or his first two names?

is the spelling correct for your gt g/mother? mariOn is usually male...mariAn female.

only reason i know is cos my nephew has marion as his middle name.

may be worth trying the alternative spelling ;-)

Is this the marriage?

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1921

Chambers Marion Shaw Birmingham 6d 676
Shaw William H Chambers Birmingham 6d 676

Guessing it may be William Henry Shaw?

As I said earlier, you really need her marriage certificate.

Please say what you think your 'brick wall' is................it is hard to imagine what it could be, with so much info readily available.

You refer to her birthplace in detail - where did you get that info?

I have to disagree, Elaine. I know many female Marions. I also have an Aunt Marion. Marian is often a short form for Mary Ann.

My mother was also MariOn!

Sue - are you sure it isn't the "Cottage of Content"? There is now a community centre there.

Please say where you got her birth info............

Flick

Flick Report 25 Jun 2011 14:14

Her name was MARION.....as per her marriage record, which is from freebmd, where you can easily check yourself

BOTH forms of the name are feminine...........I have friends with both spellings

If the family above is correct, this looks like sister Lilly's birth.

PH is an abbreviation for Public House.
Nothing to do with the prison.
Don´t think it´s there any more (the pub that is, not the prison!!!)

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 Jun 2011 14:50

Of course! Given that family found in census were publicans -that fits!

sorry if i caused offence to anyone...i was just offering a suggestion on alternative spelling.

the marian and marion are just what I was aware of.

didnt mean to imply that mariOn COULDNT be female.
