Im searching for Robert Dorton (dob 1912 i think) parents and and any brothers and sisters etc. i have looked on the census but maybe im doing something wrong.

Im also looking for the parents of Doris Hatcher (dob 1936) born in Dartford.

I have been searching censuses and bmds to try to confirm his parentage, the Frederick R Dorton born in 1914 ... there is this marriage which could possibly be his grandparents ?

oh ... but in 1881 there is this Frederick ... so Fred and Lucy did not marry until several years later !

perhaps Frederick Dorton had a son with another woman and he was registered under her name

I suspect Lucy was living with another partner because she can't be found in the census after 1881

You need to start buying some birth and marriage certificates, so that you are fairly confident that you have the correct people.
A lot of information can be found in free bmd, so you need to check what has been found with what you know.
Death certificates will gave name of informant, which may also be useful.
But there is no point in looking further back until you have got accurate facts for the immediate ancestors.

I was 'looking further back' out of curiosity of course because the records that should be there are not :-)

we always have to start with the 'known' and that is the oldest known fact in this case, that marriage

- edit - sorry - from the information you sent me it is the 1956 marriage that is the known factor so you should really start there to get info about the parties' fathers

it could be that if this death is her husband someone assumed he was born the same year as her, and if he was known by his middle name assumed his name was Robert F rather than Frederick R ... the big question that needs answering is whether this is the death of the person you are enquiring about
