Can anyone please help with any information on Mary Jane SHIELS
prior to her marriage to George Robert MASON.

I have a marriage certificate:
Date 14 August 1880
Register Office Sunderland, County Durham
Mary Jane Shiels Age 23 years Spinster
Residence 1 Wood Side Bishopwearmouth
Father - Henry Shiels (deceased) - Officer in HM Customs
and
George Robert MASON
Age 26 years Bachelor
Occupation - Upholsterer
Residence 24 Thomas Street Monkwearmouth
Father John MASON Grocer

The couple and their family are on census records in1881, 1891, 1901. Mary Jane MASON is on the 1911 census as a widow with her children.
Mary Jane MASON gives her place of birth as Peniwote? or Scotland. It is believed in my family that she came from Penicuik but I can find no record of her birth in Scotland.

Death Certificate for Mary Jane MASON 19 March 1913
Byker, Newcastle Upon Tyne age 56 years

Prior to her marriage I can find no record of her living with her family - father's name Henry Shiels on either the 1861 or 1871 census in either
Scotland or England. Maybe her father was already deceased.

There is a marriage record of a Henry Shiells, Excise Officer in the Parish of Dundee and Mary Hunton, Penicuik, in this Parish 3rd June 1852.

I have also found a record of a baptism on 29 January 1854.
Henry Shiells, Revenue Officer and his wife Mary Hunter in Fettercairn had a daughter born at Dundee 21 October 1953 and baptised at St Andrews Chapel Fasque 29 January 1854 named Margaret Eliza.

I haven't been able to find any record of this family on the 1861 or 1871 census in Scotland or England.

I have been unable to find any record of another daughter named Mary Jane Shiells. I have no way of connecting this Henry Shiells and his wife Mary Hunton (Hunter?) to my Mary Jane Shiels (also spelt Shields at a later date). Maybe not even mine?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

In 1911 Mary Jane's birthplace certainly looks like Pennycook which is pronouced very similiar to Penicuik. You may have this already but could this be the Mary Hunton in 1851 who later married Henry? Interesting that the father Charles was also a Officer Of Inland Revenue

Just to discount the birth found by AnnCardiff, that particular Henry was a coachbuilder who was still around in 1891.

Apologies for the late reply - morning again in Australia.
Thank you for all the information. Looks like I have some work to do. I had also seen the 1851 census with Henry Shiels living with Alexander McDougall the Inland Revenue Officer in Lodge Street Haddington and wondered if there was a connection.
There is also a Mary Shiels (born about 1859) on the 1871 census, a servant, living with the Brown family in Court Street Haddington which is the same street that a Henry Shiells was living in on the 1841 census.
Maybe wishful thinking on my part but perhaps there is a link somewhere.

Could someone please look up the 1871 census for me to follow up on the Elizabeth, Agnes and Mary Shiels that "Catherine" posted above on the 1861 census.
Thnak you.

Dundee Directories:

1853: Henry Shills - Officer of the Inland Revenue - living at 26 Small's Wynd.

This could fit in with the marriage information you found for Henry Shiells and Mary Hunton in Dundee 1852

I have found a record on The National Archives for a Henry Shiells
Item Reference CUST 116/34/12
Henry Shiells. Entry Papers for services as an Excise man

If I order and pay for this record can anyone give me an idea of what information I am likely to receive.

Sorry I don't know what information it would contain.

On another approach Henry, Mary and family seem disappear by 1861. Have you tried Scotlands People for Henry's death or Mary's.

Edit - Scotlands People also have detials of wills etc and maybe these would explain why the family disappear with Henry dying in Ireland

SHIELLS HENRY 15/02/1864 OFFICER OF INLAND REVENUE RESIDING AT RAMELTON IN COUNTY DONEGAL NOTE OF LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION ONLY EDINBURGH SHERIFF COURT INVENTORIES SC70/1/119

SHIELLS HENRY 15/02/1864 OFFICER OF INLAND REVENUE, RESIDING IN RAMELTON IN COUNTY OF DONEGAL LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION EDINBURGH SHERIFF COURT WILLS SC70/4/90

Also found this death announcement-

November 13 1863 - November 10, at his residence, Ramelton, MR HENRY SHIELLS, officer of Inland Revenue, aged 85 years. Maybe the age was a mistranscription and could be 35

I have sent a request for the cost of the Entry Papers for Excise Men to The Archives.

I also found the above records and death announcement recently. I hadn't thought about a wrong transcription but have made a note to see if that Henry Shiells could possibly be the father of the Henry Shiells I am following. I m putting all the pieces of information I am receiving together in the hope that they may lead somewhere. I am going to Scotland and Ireland in July on a Family History journey so the more I know before then the better. Thank you for your interest.
