After WW1, Italy acquired the Austrian province of the Austrian Tyrol, moving the border N 100km to the Bremner p ass - Bolzano is in the middle of this chunk. Italy also got Istria just N of Trieste, but Yugoslavia grabbed that back after WW2. |

Thanks both. If I ever go to Newfoundland I'll certainly go and look at the old cable station - but as I live in South Wales, UK, it's not likely to be anytime soon! I've been to Porthcurno in Cornwall where the South American cables ran from - they have a museum and had some records of my grandfather who was on various cable ships. |
