I have come back around looking at my James George Reddington ancestors.
A kind person previously looked up St Saviour records and found the above marriage. Recently I decided to send for the certificate as another relative has come up with some different info.
Much to my surprise, the record office said that James George R did not marry Susan Wingrove. Can anyone please check the Southwark records for me again and throw some light on this?
I really need to f ind someone called Susan marrying a James George Red(d)ington.

I have a feeling that the James and Susan in the 1871 census with baby son James were probably NOT married. I can't find a record of the marriage on Findmypast.

This looks like the birth of the son (the certificate would give his mother's name):-

Name: REDINGTON, James
Registration district: St. Saviour Southwark
County: London
Year of registration: 1870
Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Mother's maiden name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume no: 1D

Perhaps the 7 month old son on the 1871 census died and Susan named another son James (there is this death):-

County: London
Year of registration: 1873
Quarter of registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 3

So why didn't you add to your previous thread, Janice? There's a lot more info there. You left us in the dark on this one and didn't return to answer questions.

My great grandparents were the James and Ada Fordham registered in 1900 although I had them marrying before that-weird. From the certificate we know that James' father was also a James George and that that James was old enough to be the one born in 1875.
Therefore I have been working on the assumption that his mother was a Susan so from what you guys have found for me, the elder James does looks like the costermonger.

Sorry I didn't come back more qucikly, I wasn't expecting such a keen repsonse that fast.
I have been going on the 1881 census for the widow Susan with sons Samuel and James being the right one but this is now the problem which I can't prove and of the marriage I can't find.

As my great grandfather died very young of liver cirrhosis in the genetically inherited form, my guess has been that Susan was widowed young due to the same cause. Not being able to find a very much older Samuel Reddington that matches this kind of backs up my theory but it is also fairly spurious. I believe that my great grandmother Ada gave birth to another James George a few months after my Great grandfather died but as I haven't bought this baby's birth certifcate, I haven't confirmed that. The chances are that all the males in that line inherited the disease.

It also looks like the 1871 data could be correct and that Susan did give birth to an earlier James George who died at 3. This would account for a first living son, Samuel, NOT having his fathers names but the thirdborn being given the name instead. I don't think the herfordshire connection is likely, especially if the Martha and James who married in Southwark and the ones later recorded in Herts. My grandmothers ancestors probably all had stalls on the streets. I know she did hersself when she was a teenager
