Hi,
I am trying to trace the wife of William Hierons born 1851 Twickenham, London. All I have is Mary Ann born 1851 Berkshire. Their children were-
Emily Hierons born 1873 Holy Port, Fanny Hierons born 1879 Bermondsey,
William Hierons born 1882 Handworth Middlesex and Rose Hierons born 1886 Hanworth Middlesex.
In later years the family moved to Middlesbrough area, North East England.
I would appreciate any help, thank you.
Julia.

Their marriage certificate, or one of the children's birth certificates will give you her maiden name.
Have you looked on free bmd?

Julia

Hi Patchem,
Yes I have looked on freebmd but can not find the marriage.
Regards,
Julia.

Julia - did Mary Ann later remarry to a Bennett?

1901:

BENNETT, Mary Head Widow F 50 1851 Holly Port, Berkshire
HIERONS, William Son Single M 19 1882 General Labourer Ironwork Handworth, Middlesex
HIERONS, Rose Daughter Single F 14 1887 Handworth, Middlesex

Registration District: Middlesbrough
Civil Parish: Ormesby

Address: 68, Hymer Street, Ormesby, North Ormesby County: Yorkshire (North riding)

EDIT: - No, looking at the original it looks like they've copied her surname from the family above. Have reported error.

Hi,
Yes the parents of William were William and Charlotte Barker.
There is confusion because Mary was wrongly listed on a census
as 'Bennett' but this was the next door neighbours Surname. This was when Mary lived at Ormesby or North Ormesby Middlesbrough. On a 1911 census Mary is living with her daughter Frances Rutherford, Mary is a Widow.
Regards
Julia.

Vera

Holyport (pronounced Hollyport) is a village in the civil parish of Bray, about 2 miles south of Maidenhead in the English county of Berkshire.

Have you found William on any census with Mary Ann?

Do you know what his occupation was, and when did he die?

Julia

Julia Report 26 Jul 2012 19:41

Hi KathleenBell,
Yes I think this could be the birth of Rose(Rosina), thank you.
Hi MarieCeleste,
It looks like Mary re-married but I am not sure, someone else said it was a mistake? I will look for second marriage.
Thank you
Julia.

If Emily was born in Holy Port, it comes under Cookham.
Possibly she was illegitimate as not showing anywhere for Emily Hierons.

Fanny Hierons is showing for 1879.

William's death was very recent before the 1901 so it's unlikely that Mary had remarried, definitely an error on the census:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: 1837-1915

Name: William Barker Hierons
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1849
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1901
Age at Death: 52
Registration district: Middlesbrough
Inferred County: Yorkshire North Riding
Volume: 9d

Have searched high and low and can't find a marriage record. Means one of two things:

- They never actually married. Surprising how many couples actually didn't bother back then. Always the possibility that one or the other was already married to someone else.

- His name on marriage has been terribly mis-transcribed by all sites

Julia Report 26 Jul 2012 20:02

Hi MarieCeleste,
Yes this is the death of William, Barker was his mother's maiden name.
No I have not reported the mistake in the census.
Regards,
Julia.
