Was she married before with having the 2 surnames?

Unlikely. Did she & Wiiliam McNair divorce or did he die?

The 2nd MC might show her name as Maud Stephens formerly McNair, or the other way around. The only way to be certain is to purchase a copy.

Would obviously have given her father's name as Stephens..hence the double entry

1939 suggests that she parted from McNair and took up with Snooks. Perhaps had to wait for McNair to die before re-marrying

Perhaps she was living with William as his wife, and then they separated and both married other people in 1957 .

Aware this was 6 years ago, but it's worth a try...

William Arthur McNair (Married to Maud Stephens) was my great-great grandad and there's a family rumour that he went missing! According to my granny, Maud and him did not get along and he either ran away or there's a slightly more sinister rumour that Maud had a hand in it somehow...

He was a chauffeur to Lord Alfred Mond, and there's actually an article which says that William Arthur McNair was arrested and sent to prison for 6 months in 1924 for leaving his wife and children (it was published because he was meant to be driving Lord Mond somewhere).

Anyway, I can't find out what happened to him after prison - so on the off chance that anyone on this thread sees this, please reach out if you have found out anything else!
