Maybe clutching at straws here but I wonder if this is the Elizabeth who was a witness at Margaret's marriage.

I don't understand what that refers to - what is Kerr? Did they all die in 1979 aged 90? I don't know if the witness was married or single.

rootgatherer Report 7 Feb 2019 22:55

They are all referring to the same person. In Scotland, a death is indexed under all known surnames that the person has used. In the example above Kerr is the mother's maiden surname. On closer inspection, the lady above had married a Kelly so Kelly is not her maiden name.

Do you have the addresses of the witnesses from Margaret's marriage certificate. I'm thinking that if they were relatives, it may we worth trying to find out how they were related. Siblings, cousins etc. We really need to try to find the family on either the 1901 or 1911 census.

Not that it helps but posting as I find.

Janet Report 7 Feb 2019 23:25

On the marriage certificate of John Wilson Muir and Margaret Kelly in 1923, the bride's parents are shown as Peter Kelly and Margaret nee Allison (deceased).

Bride lived at 71 Holygate, Broxburn, groom at 70 Holygate.

Witnesses: James Kelly, Clifton Buildings, Broxburn, and Elizabeth B Kelly, 28 Shrine Place, Broxburn

The house at 71 Holygate, Broxburn, was owned by Broxburn Oil Company, which ties in with the occupation of Oil Works Labourer (Retired) on Peter's death certificate. The death certificate shows he had 2 wives: 1 Mary Carr, 2. Annie Scullion. Informant was Peter Kelly, son, with an address in Edinburgh.

I've found marriage between Peter Kelly and Annie Scullion in Broxburn in 1916; no trace of either Margaret Allison or Mary Carr, nor death of either Margaret Kelly or Mary Kelly. On another family tree on Ancestry (owner's name Kelly) it shows Peter junior as son of Anne Scullion, born 1918, died 1989, but so far I have found no trace of him either. I've mailed the tree owner to see if she has any more information, but judging from what little was on her tree I doubt she'll be able to help much.

I feel as if I'm going round in never decreasing circles.

I have already had a reply from the Kelly I contacted via Ancestry, she said she will pass my enquiry on to the Kelly FB group to see if they can help.

I've also found birth of Peter Kelly junior in Broxburn, and death in Newington, Edinburgh - which is also where his half-sister Margaret died.

Its starting to come together.

This doesn't help any. I was hoping that Peter would have been the lair holder having bought it for his first wife.

What does "lair" refer to? Sounds like a sort of crypt.

If you have a subscription to Scotland's People, would you be able to have a look at this for me? Otherwise, I'll buy some credits:

KELLY ANNIE : F : 1917 : 672/ 259 : Uphall

I had been looking for Annie Kelly's birth in Edinburgh, but of course she more likely would have been born in Broxburn, where Margaret lived.

Warming up a little now! The Elizabeth living at Shine Place was with James HAMILL and his wife Annie. This is their marriage

JAMES HAMILL
Party 2 Name ANNIE KELLY
Date of Event 13 August 1913
Group Registration ID 1762843
SR District/Reg Area Belfast

Both were of full age and Annie's father is listed as PETER KELLY, a labourer. So we now have a possible area in Ireland to look at.

Lair is just another word for plot when referring to graves.

Scotlandspeople is not a subscription site, you need to buy credits. Anything I've found there is using the free search facility. I'm also looking on FindMyPast.

The above marriage is from the Irish genealogy site.

This death may be worth looking at to see the mother's maiden name. I think she may be Margaret's sister.

Peter Kelly Snr was living at 5 Cardross Rd when he died, he had a son Peter, but Peter Jnr survived the war (1918-1989). It must have been a very frightening time for them though.

I haven't heard of Maurice before, so that's a new one to add to the tree, thank you so much for spending your time on this. My neighbour will be delighted :) He must have been born about 1913, I'll see if I can find him too. Its a pity you can't search Scotland's People like you can FreeBMD, with surname and mother's maiden name to find all births.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 8 Feb 2019 12:49

Maurice was born 1917 so his mother would have been Annie Scullion.

I'm going to buy some more credits and will have a look at the 1917 Annie Kelly, as far as the others are concerned it will be up to my neighbour to choose which certificates to buy.

I had a thought - Peter Snr's first wife was named as Mary Carr, I wonder if it should have been Kerr. I'll do a bit of digging around that next. Still doesn't explain where Margaret Allison is hiding though.

Nice work AG. Ive just had a look at the death for Annie Hamill:

Annie Hamill age 74 years
Widow of James Hamill,
Father: Peter Kelly (Shale Oilworker) deceased)
Mother: Mary Carr, deceased
Informant: James P Hamill (son) of Shrine Place Bloxburn

Janet

Janet Report 8 Feb 2019 13:28

The 1917 Uphall Annie Kelly is son of Patrick Kelly, Oil worker, whose father is also Patrick, so that's a nono. 3 Argyle Place, Broxburn, wife Catherine Kelly nee Boyle. At least I can now cross her off the list of possibles.

And no luck with Mary Kerr either.
