AustinQ, how on earth do you find all these treasures? You are a wonder!!! Thank you so much for the time you are putting into this.

I'm still looking for Margaret Allison in the USA, and the Peter Kelly/Bridget Conlin marriage in Ireland.

AustinQ Report 9 Feb 2019 12:13

Can't see the marriage yet, but it would be parish register rather than civil registration. Just looking at the ages of Peter and Bridget- I suspect either their ages are slightly out or their son Peter was born earlier than c1865 (or perhaps he was an illegitimate so of one of the daughters?). Need to look into this a bit more

Killeeshil is the civil parish for Ballynahaye:

Name: Brigidam Kelly
Baptism Age: 0
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 1853
Baptism Date: 29 May 1853
Baptism Place: Killeeshil, Tyrone, Ireland
Parish Variants: Kileeshil
Diocese: Armagh
Father: Petro Kelly
Mother: Brigida Canlan

Bridget Kelly married James McQuade 1883 Dungannon. Bridget's address was Ballynhaye and father listed as Peter Kelly (farmer). Her son, Patrick McQuade, was living with brother Owen Kelly in 1901.
-----------------------------

Name: Eugenius Kelly
[Eugene Kelly]
Baptism Age: 0
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 1855
Baptism Date: 21 Aug 1855
Baptism Place: Killeeshil, Tyrone, Ireland
Parish Variants: Kileeshil
Diocese: Armagh
Father: Petro Kelly
Mother: Brigeda Conlan
------------------------

Name: Catharinam Kelly
Baptism Age: 0
Event Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 1858
Baptism Date: 8 Jun 1858
Baptism Place: Killeeshil, Tyrone, Ireland
Parish Variants: Kileeshil
Diocese: Armagh
Father: Petro Kelly
Mother: Brigida Conlan

From the marriages both Mary Kerr and Margaret Kerr give their father as Patrick, a farmer.

Janet Report 9 Feb 2019 13:55

42 when Owen was born, 48 for Peter - perhaps they are the youngest of a very large brood!

I think to progress with Margaret Ellison/ Allison you'll need the marriage certificate. I'm not convinced that Margaret was born in the US. There was a large Ellison family living in and around Ballynahaye- despite marrying in Lanchester I wonder if she was also from Ireland.

Janet

Janet Report 9 Feb 2019 17:57

Anne is willing to buy any certificates necessary - would the marriage certificate show where she was born though? Or would the clue be in her father's details?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 9 Feb 2019 18:00

It would tell you her father's name (assuming she knew it) and occupation, and whether he was alive or deceased.
It wouldn't tell you where she was born.

Her father's details might or might not be a helpful clue - but at least more than we have to go on at the moment!

Thank you so much for the time you are putting into this, Anne is very grateful to you. I hope you are finding it as intriguing as I am.

So if the Dungannon Margaret Ellison is the right one, the Durham one probably isn't, as the 1901 said she was born in USA. Unless that's just an error on the part of the census taker, which has been known to happen.

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 9 Feb 2019 20:14

Best wait for the marriage certificate to confirm her father's name and occupation. I do think the Durham family is the correct one.

Given the names she gave her children I think the Irish birth is quite likely.

Janet

Janet Report 9 Feb 2019 22:23

Neither of the Margaret Kellys born in CoDurham between 1899 and 1901 has mother with maiden name of Allison or Ellison

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 10 Feb 2019 08:31

Hard to tell whether Margaret is 1 year or 1 month on the 1901 census, but either way I can't see a registration for her birth. The family were in Ireland by Feb 1903 to register their daughter Elizabeth. Perhaps they moved to Ireland shortly after the census and simply forgot? Annoying we can't find it .

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 10 Feb 2019 09:13

It does appear that Peter returned to Ireland very shortly after the 1901 census. I think this article in September 1901 refers to him. He was listed as a grocer on Elizabeth's birth (Feb 1903), a business that apparently didn't last long as on the births of later children he is again listed as a labourer:

Tyrone Constitution 20 September 1901

Ballygawley Petty Sessions
'Sergeant Parkes, Inspector of weights and measures, summoned Peter Kelly for not having his weights stamped as required by law.
Complainant deposed that he found two weighing instruments in the defendant's shop which had not the usual stamp on. He did not desire to press the case however, as the defendant was newly at the business, and the neglect seemed to be caused by ignorance...'
---------------------------

There is also a small note in the Tyrone Courier 04 July 1901 stating that a Peter Kelly had been appointed in charge of the Ballygawley Creamery- possibly the start of his grocery business.
