Hilda Report 13 Aug 2020 14:10

James Hamilton 1869 - Betsy Munro 1871 my G.Grand parents Scotland. I was given photograph of the family outside their croft.

I always thought that they had four daughters, last year a photo came to me with five daughters.....she is dressed all in black..the other four girls dressed entirely different. When I asked another relative who the girl on her own was....I was told she was never talked about all she could remember was she was disabled at birth and put in a home, she never married and lived to a good age, nothing else not even a name but she was their daughter.

Girl lin black born between 1895-1899.

Can anyone help me.....?

You need to buy some credits for Scotlandpeople so you can look for births of children with the surname Hamilton and mother;s maiden name Munro.

Have you found the family on census records please? The 1911 census will say how many children. You need to look on Scotlandspeople for births. It is not a subscription site. You buy credits to look at the registrations.

Where in Scotland was the Croft?

ErikaH Report 13 Aug 2020 14:25

Look for birth on Scotland’s people. Look for the family on 1901 census

You will need to buy credits to look at births, as MMN is not on the index

Look for deaths of Hamilton with MMN Munro

Only one Betsy Hamilton with right birth year and husband James on 1901 census - in Berwickshire, with one son

Please tell us where all these people were born, and the names of the known daughters. It’s important that you tell us all you know when asking for help

If the correct family (just whilst looking around)

Surname Forename Age at death Mother's Maiden Name Year Ref RD Name

HAMILTON MATILDA THOMSON 84 MUNRO 1984 281/ 88 Forres - also registered as Dunbar

HAMILTON CHRISTINA GREGO 80 MUNRO 1985 231/ 29 Inverness - also registered as Cameron

But not seeing a marriage for parents

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Aug 2020 15:33

So those two had both married, and can’t be the one being sought.

Have had a look at the 1911 census posted earlier by rootgatherer (few credits left over from a Scottish search for a friend)

James said to be born Watten, Caithness-shire and the rest Ross-shire -
Elizabeth - Rossken, Margrett - Rosemarkie, Matilda - Foddetry and Christina - Knockbain

They are said to have been married 15 years and had 3 children all still living

-------------------------------

and here the 1901 (main parts previously posted by ErikaH)

1901 England, Wales & Scotland Census

We need more info from the poster - at the moment, it’s all speculation.

Hilda -
how do you know the girl in black was born 1895-99?

Matilda's death is the only one showing on SP of a female Hamilton with mms Munro, born in that timeframe.

Her birth :

HAMILTON
MATILDA THOMSON
F
1900
065/ 1
Fodderty

It's the first birth registered in Fodderty in 1900, so she could have been born at the end of 1899.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 13 Aug 2020 17:13

Why would you suggest that the birth was 1895-9 if the parents didn’t marry until 1897?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Aug 2020 17:16

POB's from 1911 census:

James - Watten, Caithness
Elizabeth - Rossken, Ross-shire [ mis-spelling of Rosskeen ]
Margrett - Rosemarkie, Ross-shire
Matilda - Fodderty, Ross-shire
Christina - Knockbain, Ross-shire.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 13 Aug 2020 17:20

Margaret Ann's birth before the marriage:

MUNRO
MARGARET ANN
F
1895

Rosemarkie and Fortrose

If Hilda is correct in saying that her family had 4 (or 5) daughters, that can't be the right family.

What were the daughters' names, Hilda?

alviegal

alviegal Report 13 Aug 2020 19:51

There is a well researched tree on ancestry belonging to the granddaughter of Matilda.
There are beautiful family photos as well including the one at the croft.

She has these as the daughters

Elizabeth "Bessie" Ann (step father Hamilton) Munro
1890–1957
Birth 1890 • Ross and Cromarty, Berwickshire, Scotland
Death 1957 • Inverness Burg, Inverness-shire, Scotland

Margaret Ann "Maggie" (step father Hamilton) Munro
1895–1994
Birth 13 NOV 1895 • Rosemarkie, Petty, Ross-shire, Scotland
Death 30 APR 1994 • Donalda, Stettler, Alberta, Canada

Unknown Hamilton
Unknown Hamilton
1897–1980
Birth 1897? • Ross and Cromarty, Scotland
Death 1980 • Inverness, Scotland

Matilda Thomson "Tilda" Hamilton
1899–1984
Birth 30 DEC 1899 • Bogochro Fodderty Scotland
Death 15 AUG 1984 • 18, Torredon, Park, Forres, Moray, Scotland

Christina Gregor "Chrissy" Hamilton
1904–1985
Birth 2 APR 1904 • Knockbain, Ross and Cromarty , Scotland
Death 4 APR 1985 • Inverness, Inverness-shire, Scotland

As James said there were 3 children born in the marriage in the 1911 census, he must be excluding the older 2 girls.
