William Garnett was not the father of Mary Ann - she claimed that her father’s name was Robert , but that is unlikely to have been true - as per earlier posts on here.

ErikaH.
Thank you for your help.
Such a bag of worms.

Have you considered getting the digital image of the birth certificate of the illegitimate Mary Ann?

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 4 May 2025 10:27

Probably the baptism of the illegitimate Mary Anne:

Mary Anne Garnett
in the England & Wales, Christening Index, 1530-1980
Name Mary Anne Garnett
Gender Female
Christening Age 0
Birth Date 26 Apr 1852
Christening Date 11 Jul 1852
Christening Place Kendal, Westmorland, England
Mother
Agnes Garnett

There are numerous Agnes Garnetts of child-bearing age in Kendal in 1851........the birth cert should have an address, which may prove illuminating, although, obviously it's all conjecture.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 4 May 2025 11:49

'Teptomas' (1841 census) is Septimus

PatW

PatW Report 4 May 2025 13:14

Thank you for your advice. I will look further.
Lots of Garnett’s in Westmorland and very prolific. Such a lot of Garnett’s called John, William and Robert. Septimus is certainly a new one.
Pat.

ErikaH Report 4 May 2025 13:17

Septimus was ATKINSON

NO Robert Garnett anywhere with the occupation claimed by Mary when she married (as posted before)

Running with the illegitimate birth for the moment -

This Agnes Garnett looks to me like a feasible candidate - although of course conjecture:

Agnes Garnett
in the 1851 England Census
Name Agnes Garnett

Estimated Birth Year abt 1830
Relation Servant
Gender Female
Where born Hartham, Westmorland, England
[Heversham, Westmorland, England]

Agnes Garnett 21 Servant

In 1841 she was with her unmarried mother Eleanor [Jane Eleanor ] and younger brothers Richard and Joseph, in Kirkby Lonsdale

In 1861 she was in Kirkby Lonsdale, as servant to the Atkinson family.
Her 12-yr-old illegitimate son Isaac (baptised 12 Aug 1849) was also a servant in that household. in 1861.

(In 1851, baby Isaac was an "other relative" with James and Ellenor (nee Mason) Eggels [ie - Eccles] and their sons, in Lupton, Westmorland.)

I don't see Agnes definitely after 1861.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 4 May 2025 18:12

Yes - that's the right Agnes.

Mary Ann is with the Eccles family in 1861:

Mary Ann Zarnett [Garnett ]
in the 1861 England Census
Name Mary Ann Zarnett [Garnett]
Gender Female
Age 8
Relation Lodger
Estimated Birth Year 1853
Where born Aulmthrope [Milnthorpe ], Westmorland, England
Civil parish Lupton

Country England

It doesn't prove she's YOUR Mary Ann, of course - though yours did have a daughter named Ellen.
Could be after Ellen/Eleanor Eccles, or after Agnes's mother Eleanor - but it's a common name.

I know the best thing to do would be to apply for a birth certificate but Mary Ann Garnett is such a common name I might apply for the wrong one so I’ve put it on hold for the moment although I do like a challenge. I appreciate all the help received.

Her birth may not have been registered. No penalties until 1875.
