I have a marriage cert where the father is not the guy I thought he was going to be, under the brides father is a John Bowman and her name is Reed as she was born 1825 I guess I can't send for her cert and I was expecting her father to be somebody Reed is it likely that she was brought up by this man as a step daughter or does the father have to be the actual father. |

You say you haven't found her on an early census, but have you found her on any census at all? And if so, what does it say for her birthplace? Kate. |

Now do you have them in 1851 This is quite strange found this but wrong husbands name (grandson in law) but if you notice head is a Reed and Jane is his grandaughter maybe she was born out of wedlock to a lady called Reed and her father was a Bowman. 1851 Head is a Pauper Ag Lab Thomas Snr is a Ag Lab Jane Butterfield abt 1828 Tollerton, Yorkshire, England Granddaughter Tollerton Yorkshire Joseph Butterfield abt 1849 Tollerton, Yorkshire, England Great Grandson Tollerton Yorkshire Thomas Butterfield abt 1819 Sheriff Hutton, Yorkshire, England Grandson-in-law Tollerton Yorkshire Thomas Butterfield abt 1847 Tollerton, Yorkshire, England Great Grandson Tollerton Yorkshire John Reed abt 1844 Tollerton, Yorkshire, England Great Grandson Tollerton Yorkshire Jane Reed abt 1767 Rawcliffe, Yorkshire, England Wife Tollerton Yorkshire John Reed abt 1772 Youlton, Yorkshire, England Head Tollerton Yorkshire Zoe |

And you did say she died in 68 age 40 so that would make her b1828ish Zoe |

If she was 40 when she died in 1868, she was born later than 1825 Reg |

i don' t think she can have been married twice as she was a minor when she married Richard. No I haven't been able to find her on any census as i only had access to 1871 onward and she dies around 1868. |

I see this has already been found while I was typing this up... well done... Okay, looking at the 1851 census, it doesn't seem that likely that she married twice, unless her family was a bit strange! The Butterfields are with the Reeds, and Thomas is the Reeds' grandson. Tollerton, Yorkshire: John Reed age 79 and wife Jane age 84, John Reed great-grandson age 7, Thomas Butterfield grandson-in-law age 32, Jane Butterfield granddaughter age 23, Thomas Butterfield great-grandson age 4 and Joseph Butterfield great-grandson age 2. Is that them? Jane's birthplace is given as Tollerton. So John and Jane Reed are her grandparents, and so either their son or their daughter was Jane's parent. But I suppose Jane's maiden name could be Bowman before a previous marriage to a Mr. Reed if she was one of those people who married their cousin or something? More likely her mother was Miss Reed, and her father was John Bowman, but Miss Reed and John Bowman weren't married. Kate. |

I think this will be her christening from the IGI - I just looked on the map, and Alne is the next village to Tollerton! JANE REED Female -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: 09 DEC 1827 Alne, Yorkshire, England Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Mother: MARY REED Family -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages: Extracted birth or christening record for the locality listed in the record. The source records are usually arranged chronologically by the birth or christening date. Kate. |

I think the 1828 could be her birth date, I have no definates as her marriage cert only says a minor. This family looks like it could be them but would her actual father have to have signed the marriage cert or could a step father have done ti. |

The 'father's name' is not signed by the father, it is just the information that the bride or groom gives at the marriage. The father doesn't have to be there at all. Kate. |
