Hi Sunny Just to mention if you hadn't noticed: If you are just going on a find of birth on FreeBMD be advised that the district of birth is down as SUSPECT. This could be the reason you cant find her? Suzanne

The only thing I have to go on is birth of her daughter Irene Morton 1910 at Barnstaple, Devon, on birth cert no father given, mother Nellie Alice Morton. Nellie was in service at Ilfracombe, Devon at time of Irene's birth. Irene was brought up by Frederick Mardon in Exeter, Devon. no other info. Need Hercule on this one!

Suzanne Report 19 Dec 2005 01:53

Hi Sunny I had the exact same thing with my Grandmother. Born in a workhouse with no father on cert and mother in service. If you are lucky and she was born in workhouse you may be able to get hold of the workhouse admittance records and this sometimes gives much more info (possibly details of the mothers place of birth and date of birth) I stress possibly because some of these records are better than others. If this line of enquiry is of interest then the first place to start would be the Devon Records Office. Their web site addy is: http(://)www(.)devon(.)gov(.)uk/record_office.htm ignore brackets. Hi Suzanne. Thanks for that. I did find that by the time Irene was christened within a week or two of birth, she was in the workhouse with Mum Nellie. Address at birth was a different one, but of course could have been workhouse, without stating so. Irene is the mother of my friend Mike and he would dearly love to know where his gran originated, that is why i'm looking into this family. I have gone back 5 gens: on his father's line. love Sunny

Hi Sunny Now I come to think of it, my Nan was born in a workhouse in 1907 and on the birth cert it just has the address of the workhouse on it. I was told by someone in the know that at some point in history they stopped putting WORKHOUSE on the certificates because of the reputation and shame at the time. Even if she was in a workhouse at a later date the admittance records would hold the same information. Suzanne
