I can't see her going from Canada to UK before that, with any of the possible name permutations.

Alison

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 20 Aug 2017 22:17

Can someone have a look and see what the house number is for Margaret (1876) and Thomas (1868) Edwards, in Smith Drive, Bootle in 1939, please?

I'm hoping they're not at number 1 !

Rambling

Rambling Report 20 Aug 2017 22:23

At no 1 is an Ernest A Cawley and mother Elizabeth H Cawley , possibly

Marriages Mar 1924 (>99%)
Cawley Ernest A Medlicott W.Derby 8b 354
Medlicott Elizabeth H Cawley W.Derby 8b 354

edit yes it is the son
Births Sep 1924 (>99%)

ArgyllGran Report 20 Aug 2017 22:24

Phew !!

Then maybe that's the correct Doris.
If not, the Desmond and Edwards names would be a huge coincidence.

Rambling

Rambling Report 20 Aug 2017 22:27

Just for confirmation Margaret & Thomas Edwards are at no 27 :-)

Having said that it doesn't give any more info, what it does have written in above "Mother Mrs Edwards is the word "Step", had Mr Edwards married again?

Alison

Alison Report 20 Aug 2017 23:12

He only married Rachel that's the information I've got

Rambling Report 20 Aug 2017 23:16

Doris went on assisted passage, as a domestic

"British Immigration

Generally speaking, British immigration may be divided into two classes, viz.-(I) Those who receive assisted passage, and (2) Those who pay their own fare.

The Assisted Passage Agreement of December 28, 1929, was effective during the calendar year 1930 and applicable to the following classes of migrants: (a) Selected families proceeding under an approved Land Settlement Scheme; (b) Selected families for farm placement; (c) House-workers, and (d) Juveniles."

Is this Rachel then? the birth year is out and I can't find the daughter's birth? EDIT oh yes I can I think but it is entered as Edwards/Dayer

There are 4 closed records above Rachel's name on the 1939, visible above that is an Elizabeth Edwards at the same address, but the age is unfortunately obscured by the black redaction line.

AustinQ

AustinQ Report 21 Aug 2017 07:51

The Elizabeth Edwards at the same address as Rachel on the 1939 is transcribed as:

50 Marsh Lane , Bootle C.B., Lancashire, England
Elizabeth Edwards 11 Oct 1906 Female House Wife Unpaid Married

EDIT: According to a tree on Ancestry- this Elizabeth was married to Rachel's son, Arthur Thomas Edwards:

Marriages Sep 1929
Edwards Arthur T Plunkett W.Derby 8b 1320
Plunkett Elizabeth Edwards W.Derby 8b 1320

ArgyllGran Report 21 Aug 2017 09:04

Her birth:

PLUNKETT, ELIZABETH mms BARNES

Maybe "step" on Doris's travel record is the immigration clerk's mistake or confusion, because of Mr Edwards being her step-father?
