Have any of you noticed that Genes Reunited have discontinued giving you a choice of potential Marriage Mates with their pre-1912 Marriage Records.

I queried this with them, and they have sent me an email saying that they have no plans to reinstate this facility in the future.

This poses difficulties, in particular with tracing a female ancestor. You can no longer trace your relative, using the Census' with a process of elimination method, by trying each of the surnames of the prospective husbands in turn.

You would also not be able to find the Maiden Name of the female who marries into your family, unless it is a clear match of course.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH GR OVER THIS- WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF YOU?

It has been talked about before on the Genealogy board and I think there is a thread about it on the suggestions board

I don't use GR for records anyway and usualy refer people to freebmds

I do not use Genes records, but on two previous threads about this matter it has got me quite angry.

I am beginning to think that this site has no idea what it is doing

Edit - I had some credits, so wasted some to find nothing :-(

Hi Jax

I am certainly getting fed up with GR. I didn't realise that there had been previous threads about this.

I know a lot of people prefer Ancestry for researching their tree, and it is making me want to look into it now. I always felt satisfied with GR and never felt the need before.

I think they must be losing members. As much as I am enjoying the Community Boards, I joined GR for the genealogical aspect of it. I am certainly considering discontinuing my Platinum Membership when the present one expires.

With freebmd's you can search a specific quarter, you can search as many years as you wish in one go, (Provided their are not too many results) you can do a Phonetic search of surnames ( useful when a name has different spellings) you have different options as to format when you want to see the actual index image, You can search images that have not been transcribed yet, they have scanned images upto 1984? and you can do much more

Hi Roy

I just out of curiosity put my G Grandfather into freebmd's Search. I know exactly when he married and who, so I used it as a tester. But it only gave me his name and not my G Grandmother's name. Perhaps it is because it is Pembrokeshire do you think? Perhaps they haven't got complete records in some areas?

You have to click on the blue number at the side of the record...then you get other names

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 27 Feb 2014 16:51

When it gives you his name, click on the page number, that will then list all people on that same page number

as everyone says, this has been noted as a problem on GR for several weeks, or even months

But .............. I've never used GR records, so what do I know? :-)

Freebmd is wonderful for all records from July 1 1837 to approximately 1966.

I have some rellies, born in Scotland, who moved to Northumberland.... I can find their children's names (possibly) for marriages, but the year is too early to see the spouse :-(

Ah well, doesn't matter......... I have thousands of rellies in Utah to look for :-D
