what do you mean ......... too early to see the spouse??

If you click on the page number at the end of a freebmd marriage, it opens up the names of other people.

there could only be 2 names, usually 4, occasionally 6 or 8.

BUT what you do then is go to the next census after the marriage and see if you can link up 2 of the names.

For example, looking for the marriage of Dyson Whiteley approximately 1890-95 gives the following ...............



Marriages Mar 1893 (>99%)

Whiteley Dyson Oldham 8d 590


clicking on 590 shows this ....................


Marriages Mar 1893 (>99%)
Buckwright Sarah Hannah Oldham 8d 590
Cadd Albert Edward Oldham 8d 590
McBride Mary Jane Oldham 8d 590
Whiteley Dyson Oldham 8d 590


Checking the 1901 Census shows ..............

Name: Dyson Whiteley
Age: 52
Estimated birth year: abt 1849
Relation to Head: Head
Gender: Male
Spouse: Mary G Whiteley
Birth Place: Yorkshire, England
Civil Parish: Oldham
Ecclesiastical parish: St Margaret
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England


Looking at the image shows that Mary G has been mistranscribed, it actually shows as Mary J


Thus, we have the married couple.

That was the method that I used with GR before they changed things!! :-|

A phrase comes to mind.....IF IT'S NOT BROKEN-DON'T FIX IT! :-| :-| :-D

It does seem odd that GR have made this decision, when the records they show are those from the FreeBMD website.

But I have always used FreeBMD.

Has GR offered a reduction in the subs to cover this withdrawn part of the service?

As I have said on the other threads about this....it is all well and good saying you use Freebmd, but you need to be told about it first.

When I first joined in 2010 I had a gold membership and it took me a few months to work out what people were saying, when they said why don't you use freebmd?....we didn't have the Hyperlinks as we have now and I didn't know how to copy the url

There must be many people who have signed up to Genes and just bought credits, never using the boards, that think it is the norm not to find a choice of spouse when looking for a marriage....or maybe GR are inundated with complaints about it?

Do the team use GR records for their research? if they do they wouldn't get very far now would they?

When searching for a marriage on FMP you can still put in the names of 2 people you think might have married each other ;-)

Yes you can do this on other sites including freebmd...which doesn't cost you a penny......but if I want to know who Louisa Emma Taylor married in 1882 it will not give you any clues on GR...but will cost 5 credits for nothing
