exciting stuff wan't it .. This is Janet etc.. We went on to Wide Range readers as well - still see them occasionally when I visit schools. They tried to revive Janet and John a few years ago but it didn't take off. Happy Days though. Kate |

When I worked in school in 70s it was Ladybird series Here is Peter. Here is Jane. Here is Pat the dog....etc. The biggest problem with them was that they were 1a..1b.. then 1c, the latter being linked to writing skills. Many children were held back from progressing through the reading scheme because the headmistress insisted that the work from 1c was completed before children started on 2a. My own children started to read with Through the Rainbow. The first red books were large and soft covered. Often I'd iron the corners of the pages flat, when they brought home an untidy copy. Gwyn |

Gwyn I didn't learn with i.t.a but a couple of friends kids did. they blame their poor spelling on it. The fact that is hasn't lasted suggests it didn't bring the success it was thought it would. Maybe this governent will suggest we go back to it?!! Kate |

Did anyone learn with i.t.a ( Initial Teaching Alphabet) which was the big new idea in the 1960s? I remember trying to read a story ( written in i.t.a.) to a group of children and found it really hard going... Gwyn |

I learnt to read with Janet and John, all my children learnt with Biff and Chip, I think I knew them all off by heart by the time the youngest had been through them. Carolyn |
