Hi Jess Could you ask him please if there is anything that I can fit onto my car that will keep me down to 30 in a 30 area. I have got a feeling that I have been caught again today, doing slightly over 30, for the second time in a year by a mobile police camera :)))) Chrissie x

Hows this for a puzzle. my Rover 827 had a blowing flex pipe so a garage repaired it by welding a solid piece of pipe in its place. went down south and the pipe broke of just behind where it had been welded. Had it repaired new piece of pipe fitted and that started blowing on the way home. Should I take it back to the origional repairer as he should have known that the pipe was liable to break with the way those V6 engines move. the above the reason for me not making London on the 12th plus a throat infection.

Jess / Jamie - thats so kind-thank you! My Ford Puma 1.4 completely stopped a couple of weeks ago, the engine 'broke' because there was no oil in the car (the light didnt come on!) So, I need to get a new engine, my mechanic said its gonna be difficult to get a new engine cos its a 1.4 rather than the usual 1.7. He says he can find one, but its gonna be new so bout £1500 not inc labour etc. Any suggestions??? Ju xxx

Malc I cant help, I have a 827 and dont you just love it. I have had mine for 6 years now and it is just lovely but the bodywork lets it down a bit. Other half is a Rover fanatic he has a 600 I think. I dont take much notice really. when I change my car it will be another Rover 827.

Debbie

Debbie Report 15 Feb 2005 21:10

Malc I am julian ,debbies other half, how well do you cherish your car.!! The reason I say this is that the 2.7 produces 175bhp and a sh*t load of torque. The flex join is there to accomadate the engine as it twists when you accelrate. If the shop has removed the flex joint and welded the pipe solid then you are asking for a lot of trouble as when you accelrate instead of the flex giving when the engine rocks the whole exhaust will twist and if they are really really good welders and the exhaust dosnt give then you will snap the studs on the manifold, not the ones on the exhaust down pipes.. the result will be that due to the configuation of the V6 you will have to lift the engine out to replace the studs if they can be sucessfully removed and helicoiled as the heads are ali and liable to having the threads in the heads stripped. Or you could go the other route and have the heads removed with new top end gasket kits fitted which will cost you an awful lot of dosh which can result in up to £650+. the replacement exhaust is main dealer only if memory serves me correct and will set you back in the region of £130. Your call and please bear in mind prices are approx as main dealer service charges are expensive. regards debbies other half. ps reason I know this is that debbies car is also a 827 which I have had the absolute pleaure of maintaining.

Hi Julian What had happend was the frontpipe broke around the welding of the flange joint just in front of the 'cat' it broke clean round as the bloke in Plymouth showed me. He replaced it with a new pipe but thats now blowing around the top joints somewhere so could be a manifold job. gets me down as I always did my own work but now Arthritis in my spine stops me. I bought the 827 a couple of weeks agoas my other car a 416 blew its headgasket. 5 years/98000 miles and the first problem I have had with it . But can repair that as wont be laying on the floor.

Debbie

Debbie Report 15 Feb 2005 21:33

malc, the 827 down pipe is a twin skin design. The ehaust manifolds that are bolted to the head come down the front and back of the engine and meet up with the down pipe flange assemblies of which there are two. These are all linked to the flex pipe which then bolts onto to the cat. If the garage has welded the outside of the first skin I very much suspect that they were unable to weld the inner skin. This would result in the inner skin of the down pipe releasing the exhaust gasses into the space were the inner skin meets the outer skin thus presurising the outerskin and forcing the welds to blow. There are ways you can repair this but personally before it becomes to much of a problem speak to rover and get yourself the exhaust downpipe, then go round to the local exhaust garage and get them to fit it. This is what I had to do to the missus car but the studs snapped off when they removed the down pipe assembly so they had to spend a bit of time getting what was the remainder of the studs out. The down pipe cost me £130 from rover and £25 for it to be fitted. That was 6 years ago and apart from all the scrapes from the spead ramps its still solid so I guess £30 a year is not that bad really is it. regards julian

My Peugeot 206 automatic.... about once every two months when the engine is cold, it will go into 'safe mode' after I've been driving for about 2/3 minutes. The D & S indicators flash. I have to pull over, restart the engine and it works fine. No problems until it happens again. I hope this is making sense. Have taken it to a dealer but they can't find anything wrong with it. Help if you can understand what I've written!! Please!

julianna...jamie says...search on the internet or auto trader...you maybe able to find a 1.4 engine...the 1.4 engine is relatively rare BUT there are people out there that have got reconditioned ones...you may find it just as cheap to ask Ford cos they may have a stock pile of them

JessyG

JessyG Report 15 Feb 2005 22:12

malc...jamie says julian is correct there...there is nothing else he can add just shop around for the best deal but get it done sooner than later or else you will be paying for a new exhaust and manifold repair!
