I am confused entirely with your family

I hate doing the Welsh side of OH's family, too many people with the same surnames :-)

Hi Sylvia It is confusing. not just the surnames most familys had the same first names too . you had grandmother Mother and daughter all with the same name.and often their siblings would be named after a brother or sister of the parent .
Another thing in my family is marriages between cousins was common which explains the same surnames . It is allowed here . I know some countries don't approve of it .

Re the question How do I know Elizabeth's maiden name was Thomas . I an not certain but it does keep coming up in the searches when I put in John Thomas . The person from Bridgend history told me there was a marriage between John Thomas and Elizabeth Thomas in Swansea in 1852 . Also AnnCardiff has found one in Swansea on the first page of this thread . but I haven't found that one . Still looking for one with the brides father Francis Thomas to check that one .
EDIT Marie Christine has ruled out the 1852 AnnCardiff marriage

I don't see how Bridgend History could come up with anything so certain without having sight of the certificate.

You need to work back from a child of Elizabeth and John and see what her maiden name was

Think this might be the wedding of Elizabeth and John's parents . It mentions Banns so would it be a church wedding . I tried parish records but can't find it .
Problem is a lot of Swansea was destroyed in WW2 so I don't know if the records survived .

I think I'll have to bow out of this query as I can't get my head around any hard proof that Elizabeth's maiden name was Thomas.

I could be wrong . But there are so many weddings with John Thomas and Elizabeth ???? I can't match any of the other names to Swansea . and Bridgend didn't find any there that matched . Will have to try again to check the biths of the children

You have latched onto Elizabeth Thomas of llanridian. There are at least five or six other possibilities. The only way you will ever be able to be sure is to get one of the children's birth certificates. Given the common names, it might take a few punts before you find the right one.

There is also the possibility that they didn't actually marry.

The birth for Walter in 1913 is correct . I have been told by the family he was one of twins and his twin died at birth . Also contacted the cemetery and found the plot of baby Elizabeth. will put a little flower container there now .
