Doesn't look like William and Sarah went to America.
Back to the Chamberlains.

You were asking wether the families posted by Anne in 1881 census would still be around in 1891.

I`ve taken a look and

Robert Chamberlain died in 1883 and Mary his wife remarried in 1886 to Thomas Boot, they are on the 1891 census with her 4 children by Robert .......Anne, Emma, John, and Robert.

Thomas Hind and his family are there in 1891, mistranscribed as Hand, he is still a Lacemaker and also Innkeeper.

As for George and Charlotte Chamberlain....... looks like Charlotte died in 1886 and I found a George Chamberlain on his own in 1891 who I think may be him, his daughter Sylvia seems to have married in 1882

So this rules out any of those from the 1881 census going to America before 1891.

Passenger lists for people leaving UK start at 1890 on Findmypast, it may be worth asking for a look-up for the Chamberlain surname bound for America. I only have 1911 now on Fmp so can`t look for you.

We don't know it was the Chamberlains who went to America.

It wasn't any of the Hind sons:

Adolphus d 1894, William 1874, Richard 1907, Augustus 1891.

(Unless there are some we don't know about).

Adolphus (Frances's father) married Mira Smith, so it might have a Smith who went to America. Frances herself married David King, so it might have been a King. Or maybe one of Frances's own children.

Hi Madmeg..

this is like looking for a needle in a haystack...I`ve just been looking at the incoming passenger lists on Ancestry....many many Chamberlains....far too many to pinpoint the correct people without having more to go on.

And as you say ...what if they wern`t Chamberlains???

Anne of green Gables found some information on Chamberlain Mallet and Co. Lace Manfactureres, but if you look at the information it seems that it covers 1834-1844...........so maybe we are looking at the wrong generation.

Looking back at Babaras original posting it says Aunt polly went to visit her sister, could that be Maria E born a few years before Mary Ann?

Not quite right, Nicky:

"I found some notes written by my Aunt concerning her Grandmothers sister Aunt Polly. I do not know which sister is Polly as she had 5 born about the 1850's. Their surname was Hind. The note read Aunt Polly went twice to America first class to visit them."

She doesn't say who "them" were.

Of course, now I've re-read that, I realise there is also

I`m getting really confused with this.

Madmeg your correct, she does say them....but.....if the family name was Hind why did Babaras original post ask about the chamberlain family who went to America?

If its none of the girls, Maria, Frances or Mary ann {polly] ...none of them married a chamberlain

then it has to be one of the boys, who maybe married in to the Chamberlain family {a distant cousin??} the only connection with Chamberlain that we know of is Sarah Chamberlain who married william Hind and would have been their grandmother,

going to check out all the sons marriages.

George E C Hind married 1890...but not to a Chamberlain....and is with her in 1911 and also B in law and M in law.

John E Hind marriage more difficult to pinpoint, he`s the only one i can`t account for.

what about this one?? obviously don`t know who married who, but in right area..

Mary, do you or Janet know who it was that Polly went to visit?

We have ruled out most of the family - could it have been a neighbour, friend, employer? I've run out of ideas.

Hello all you busy researchers you certainly have found out a lot.

What sent me to ask for help were these notes from a letter.

"Aunt Polly also told me we were very wealthy then one morning we got up

and were told that they were poor. My Grandma blamed the

Chamberlains who took the work machines, the work people and there

families to America they were the first lacemakers to go there. Aunt Polly

went over twice to visit them which was quite an achievement nearly a hundred years ago.and she travelled firstclass to America."

The lady who wrote the letter was born in 1908 and died more than 20 years ago. Fascinating reading but is it true?

it was Janet who sent me a copy of this intrigueing letter. I have gone abit further with the Hinds but proving it all is so difficult. to prove I have refered back to your tree a few times, a good reference point.

Another thought what about Sarahs siblings. The name Chamberlain carried through a lot of her descendants perhaps hers was an important family

Have you tried the Lace Museum in Nottingham to see if they have any info on a Chamberlain family ?

They have lots of info on the Lace Industry and families connected to it

I think the letter is fascinating. I love a bit of a mystery so i will try & look through my file (2") of Hind notes i have saved "just in case".
I have tried researching Sarah Chamberlain's family several times but cannot prove the families i have found belong to hers - and it would seem that no one else has too!
Pleased my tree has been of help to you.

Here's what i've managed to find out so far.
In my tree i have a John Frederick Hind b.1889 Notts(son of Albert Hind & Sarah). He died 1969 in Scranton,Lackawanna, Pennsylvania. He emigrated with his family in 1927.
In my notes i researched Scranton and discovered that there was a Scranton Lace Company.
It was founded in 1897 and was the world's largest producer of Nottingham lace.
The Scranton Lace Company used authentic Nottingham looms that were shipped from England.
In the 1911census John Frederick's occupation was a Lace machine worker so he probably could have gone to work at the Scranton Lace Company.
This has made me wonder if this could be the connection to your letter.
I found 2 articles from the New York Times Archives.
The first one published Jan 22 1891 and the second published March 29 1891
- a little snippet - " a party of Englishmen have been negotiating for some time the location of a large lace factory .......the building of the factory was expected to begin in a short time followed by the removal of costly machinery from England together with about forty families of lacemakers".
