Hi Jacqueline, many thanks for all this very useful information. I understand that Vernon Albert Mills Bradshaw married Doris Grace Gloster in Australia in 1921, which is probably why you couldn't find a record of their marriage. He was quite a jet setter by the sounds of things. Always travelling abroad, probably on business with his job as a motor agent I presume.

Nottingham Evening Post 24/06/1921

Under the will of William Bradshaw who died aged 84, Vernon received a legacy

William left £497,451.07.01 giving various amount to 16 different people and causes the residue was left to his nephew Vernon Albert Mills Bradshaw or should he die during the lifetime of the testator it was to go to the University College Nottinghamshire

Vernon obviously got the money because ...

Evening Telegraph and Post, Dundee 26/02/1930

Vanished £120.000 Fortune

Big Losses in Motor Company.
Major Vernon Albert Mills Bradshaw, of Kensington Court, London, was granted an order of discharge, subject to asuspension of one year, today at the London Bankruptcy Court.

The debtor failed December 1926, with provable debts of £ 17,241 and assets which realised £1,504.

In December 1919 he inherited £120,000 under the will of an uncle, the money being invested in industrial securities and mortgages. He toured round the world on pleasure, and in 1924 became a director of two motor companies, in connection with which he lost over £87,000.

During the three years preceding his failure the debtors income was £6,000 per annum and his expenditure £8,000, and the Official Receiver opposed the application on the ground of unjustifyable extravagance in living.

Also Yorkshire Post 04/06/1925

....claims and demands against the estate of John Mills Bradshaw late of the Coppice Hospital Nottinghams deceased who died 29/09/1922 intestate ....letters of administration were granted to Vernon Albert Mills Bradshaw the heir at law....the undersigned being the solicitors of Vernon etc. on 30/06/1925 the said Vernon etc will distribute the assets of the said John Mills Bradshaw deceased amongst the parties entitled etc etc

Great find.....

..........and a classis example of the lack of respect for money shown by someone who hasn't worked for it.........

Vernon also had probate shared with his mother Annie for the will of his father Albert Septimus Bradshaw he left £40,861.10.06 his address was the Waldorf Hotel Middlesex. he died on 12/07/1914 leaving £40,861.10.06. I guess his mother died soon after and he had another lot of inheritance to squander.

I'm intrigued now and hope you bring this story right up to date.
