Hi, I'm not sure if I have posted in the correct place-this is my first post.

I am researching my Mothers side of the tree as she know nothing other than her dad was from Chester-le-street and he had a few siblings. Finding the siblings is going to cost a fair bit as I will need to order a fair few birth certificates.

Anyway I found out her grandmother was called Dorothy and her Maiden name was Hume from the marriage certificate and her father was called Thomas. The death certificate gave the date and place of birth- 25th February 1895 in Gateshead. (the informant was one of her children)

This is where I'm a little stuck! There is no record of a Dorothy Hume Born in that area in that year but there was a Dora and her father was Thomas, I am convinced that this is the lady so I ordered the birth certificate but the birth certificate has the date of birth as 25th January 1895.

I have done a little research and in 1895 they had 6 weeks to register a birth or the parents would incur a fine and also if a birth was registered late the birth certificate would need to be signed twice by a registrar and super intendant registrar and this certificate is not signed twice and appears to be registered a few days late. Does anyone think I am right in thinking this is my lady and the registrar wrote January instead of February?

Gidnoid, what was Thomas's occupation on the certs please,

1901 as above he was a tramway labourer

1911 blacksmiths striker

that might help confirm whether Dora and Dorothy are one and the same?

Dora's 1895 birth cert says Thomas is a General Labourer and the1916 Marriage cert says he is a Bricklayer so i'm guessing he's some kind of handyman.

Wow that's interesting! The surname on the death certificate is spelt this way and her mother is also called Mary. Would you say the registrar wrote Jan instead of Feb by accident in this case?

I've just ran a search on Dora Hulme births and there was 2 in 1895 but not in gateshead so the parish record you have must be correct.

There are quite a few Dora hume's so the marriage must be another, would you agree?
