Hi

I have been trying for ages to find the below mentioned person for ages in 1841 and have even done blanket searches using the original pages but to no avail. Trouble is, it was in London. Here is the info I have.

Emma Auber aged 28 (probably rounded to 25) born Middlesex
Edwin Auber aged 9 months (born Sep 1840) born Middlesex

In 1840, they are at Union Buildings, Hoxton. Have checked and they are not there by June 1841.

In 1843 they are at Seymour Place, Clerkenwell. Checked 1841 and again not there. I would really love to find where they were in 1841 though as this could be crucial.

Emma's son Edwin was illegitimate. Emma was born in May 1813 in Bethnal Green and registered her mums death in 1858. But she gave her maiden name as Oxley on 1840 birth cert for Edwin, and said Auber formerly Auber in 1843. Her 3rd child was born in 1850 and she used her mums maiden name, yet all 3 were illegitimate.

I just cannot find them on 1841 though.

Thanks

Ben

For reference--is this Emma and children in 1851? It states that she is widowed.

Hi Joan

Thanks. I wonder if she lied in 1851 about her widowhood.

Edwins birth was mistranscribed as Anba in 1840 but the cert is him as the birth cert info fits.

In 1841 she must have been in around the Hoxton or Clerkenwell area, but where I wonder????

Ben,

I'm a little confused...is Auber her maiden name or was she indeed married. Why two sons' names as Edwin?

Joan

Benjamin

Benjamin Report 9 Aug 2008 15:06

I think Auber is her maiden name as she regieterd her mum's death in 1858. She was Elizabeth Auber and she had a daughter Emma in 1813.

I dont think Emma ever married. That is why it is crucial to find her in 1841.

Okay, who is George?? Is that Edwin Gore? It states in the 1861 census that she is widowed still.

Edwins sep 1840 birth cert says Emma's maiden name was Oxley. She was baptised Emma Auber only. I would have thought she would be easier to find in 1841 if she had a son.

Benjamin

Benjamin Report 9 Aug 2008 15:26

Sorry correction. Having just checked the cert it says Emma Auber formely Obey not Oxley sorry. Brain is getting overloaded.

The birth was registered in October 1840, so 8 months before the 1841 census.

Emma did lie of the birth certs. She said that the father was Joseph Auber a carpenter.

Ben, I can't find Emma or Edwin on the 1841 census. If it's there, it's under a misspelled last name and that's why it's not coming up. Perhaps you should obtain a copy of Edwin's marriage certificate to see what is stated on the record 20+ years later. It may or may not give you a clue.

Nothing came up for Obey either.

Ben, is it possible that you do not have the correct Emma. If Edwin's birth states that his mother's maiden name was Obey, then it's possible that Emma married into the Auber family. Why would she give a different maiden name if she wasn't married.

Hi Joan

I cannot find such a marriage and Emma Auber definately registered the death of Elizabeth Auber in 1858. Elizabeth never had a son called Joseph but in the 1841 census I did find a David Obey, a carpenter in Clerkenwell yet Emma gave her maiden name as Obey and said that Joseph Auber was a carpenter. It was to cover up an illegitimate child I think. There are no deaths for Joseph Auber at all. Thanks for looking in 1841. Yes maybe they are under a misspelt surname.

I wonder if David Obey was the father.
