The US dont have bank hols like us, they have stuff like labor day, veterans day and a few more but most businesses stay open.

Whats Mr Jones been doing for you Fanny?

Retail/hospitality stuff rarely shuts down these days Ja..x but on bank holidays the commerce sector is shut

My cousin who is from Atlanta told me a couple of years ago that the only holidays he gets are Christmas , Easter and Thanksgiving, he doent even get labor day as he works in the hospitality business

We'll get an extra day next year for Lizzies diamond jubilee......good old Liz!

I worked in a Bank for many years....so yes I got the days off also at the same time and up until I finished work in Jan 2009 I had been in the hospitality trade, so unless I chose to have bank holidays off I worked.

My days off were Mondays and Fridays, so worked out well with the bank holidays when we did'nt get paid any extra for it...but I worked most Xmas and New years days as they could fall on any day and it was compulsary in a way

Yes Gin, other than Simcoe day the others are all legislated holidays ... If you are required to work on the holiday the employer must pay double for that day. Simcoe day is a Civic holiday not legislated as a holiday but is treated as such.

It is only called Simcoe day in Toronto and surrounding areas (after John Greaves Simcoe first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada (essentialy Ontario)

The only bank holidays that we got anymore than minimum wage was Xmas, Boxing and New years day then we got £25 bonus for the full day and £12.50 for a 4 hour shift....Tips were Cr&p xmas day too :-(

we have the same holidays as R, except for Family Day .... and we'll be getting that as of 2013, slightly different though, I believe.


Banks close on all stat holidays ................... and will get to take off the day before or day after if the stat holiday happens to be a day on which they would not be open anyway. OH discovered that his credit union was closed yesterday (Saturday) because they do not open on a Monday.

But yes, all retail, hospitality, etc etc work normal shifts on stat holdiays ....... and most in BC do not get extra pay

A Thanksgiving feast was actually held in Canada some years before the first one in the US ...... but the Americans never acknowledge that!


But, yes, Ginny is right ........ it's thanks for all the harvest, and has now lost any religious significance. The first US one also thanked the Indans for all the help given to the early settlers in showing them native foods toe at and grow.
