Back.

All went well with my visitors even though the second batch were an hour later than they thought they would arrive. Not to worry, got my Christmas Round Robin almost finished.

So, how's things with everyone???

so frustrated with GR that I'm seriously thinking of giving up on the site

and will probably base myself on familytreeforum ....... which was started by GR'ers back in 2007, and is full of familiar faces.

If you want to know why I'm so fed, see my post on Suggestions.

My uncle had a coal fire and I loved it.....we had central heating so was not used to a real fire

I have a real a pretend coal fire here too.......but i have central heating too :-D

Cynthia Report 30 Nov 2011 20:50

Aw Sylvs.....you'd miss us don't ferget. :-(

I love a coal fire but not the work which went with it. My grandad (the one with the medals), used to keep a roll of newspapers which I think he had stuck together and he would unroll them on the way to making up the fire and use them as a pathway back and forth so that he didn't get sooty prints on the carpet!!

I love the smell of a bonfire and burning wood. Mmmmm.

Anyone been on 'the other side' tonight? My chat facility has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it. Is it general or just me?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Nov 2011 21:04

Just you I guess Cyn...I aint got one...But you aint online to chat anyhow, but Bezzie is so by~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am with Sylvs and am thinking of not renewing..But onle thinking at the mo..I mean I aint even got time to think much nowadays anyway let alone play puters unless its to Skype Mr Hs parents..No take that back..Let Mr H Skype his parents,he does it so much better than me.. :-D

Keep yer coal fires and yer woodburners thanks..All those years of em and I now LOVE my instant mess and labour free gas fire...
And no more of the kids asking why I am getting dressed to go to bed and when I was a child going to school in tights with with white bobbles on cos I wore em in bed too and it was too d**n cold to change in the morning as no fire alight as parents just went straight out on rising to milk cows and feed other animals...

Mr H has no window in his window hole in his bedroom this evening as it has been taken out to make into a doorway through to the conservatory and that is very draughty as conservatory not totally weatherproof yet...So we shut the curtains and put them through the hole to stop the wind getting through so bad...He is also sleeping in his dressing gown on top of his PJs...But it dont seem to bother him.... <3
And no ,I dont have elsewhere for him to sleep as with his "likkle"probs he wouldnt sleep anywhere but in HIS bedroom anyway...

Thank Evans they can go to school tomorrow.I am shattered from keeping him away from K who is sorting out the new toyroom....Bet K will be pleased to only have the one person with "likkle"probs tomorrow to deal with as well :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D
Night all

Gee Report 30 Nov 2011 21:37

Fanny you mean the little un is in his bedroom, sleeping with no window?

Couldnt you at least board it up for the night?

He'll need more than jams and dresser to keep him warm....sheesh

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 30 Nov 2011 22:12

Gins he has a conservatory/playroom(nearly finished)only with a few bad draughts on the outside and its no worse that sleeping in a tent or a draughty old farmhouse anyway..We tuffen em up here in Wales yer knows..!
But he does have a thick duvet plus Welsh blanket and of course his own special fleecy "cuggar"blanket...

Cyn??When did you NOT have probs eh????

Gee

Gee Report 30 Nov 2011 22:18

Oh thats OK then....what about the big hole in the wall where anyone could get in while you sleep in your bungalow?

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 30 Nov 2011 22:33

What a nesh lot you are, I thought that Northeners were made of tougher stuff. It hasn't even got down to freezing yet.

When I were a lad we didn't have central heating, double glazing, insulated walls or loft, running hot water or indoor plumbing for that matter. The WC was outside up the yard, unlit and with a door that finished 6" from the floor. The only form of heating was a coal fire in the living room around which the family huddled together for warmth but even that was let go out overnight as coal was rationed. Ice on the inside of the bedroom windows was a regular feature during winter and 12.5 tog quilts had yet to be invented.

But we was happy :-D

Persephone

Persephone Report 30 Nov 2011 23:36

We had outside toilet and also had to walk across yard ter washhouse. When the wind blew the wall paper that was attached to scrim moved as well. I didn't even know what central heating was... but we were lucky we had two fireplaces one in the sitting room and one in my parents bedroom (they were back to back with the one chimney)....We got a fridge when I was 8, until then we kept meat in safe and if it went off dad would soak in vinegar and then cook it up. Washing was done in copper and the wringer was by hand.

When I stayed in the country the only water was rainwater collected in tank so we had to bath in another one's bathwater. The outside privvy was a long drop... but we cooked on the coal range which was lovely in winter but sweltering in summer.

And we played tennis and cricket and rode our go karts in t'middle of road. And no one's mum took us to school in a car..

Thems was the days..

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 1 Dec 2011 02:05

we had a coal fire when I was young, and up tot he time I left the UK in 1967!

Until I was 11, we lived in a house with a tippler loo at the end of the backyard, and no inside bathroom.

Then we moved to a house with a bathroom. LUXURY!

except it was so bliddy cold in the winter, that Dad eventually bought a paraffin heater to try to keep it warm.

The drain pipe from the sink and bath ran down the outside of the wall, and used to freeze up in winter. Dad would boil a kettle, then lean out the window to pour boiling water down the drain pipe.

Ginger marmalade morning.......thanks Sylvs....

Nesh indeed Jonesey et al. These young 'uns don't they're born! I only have a vague recollection of outside loos but remember what cold bedrooms were like! I had an eiderdown on my bed and, when she made my bed, my mum used to fold it in half, lay it across the bottom of the bed and pull it down in the middle. Apparently it then resembled a butterfly :-S

Hopefully a relaxing day today.....well, apart from some shopping and the usual

ironing!

:-D
