Find Ancestors

i have my grandfathers death and marriage certs and i am trying to get further back om my tree but have got a bit stuck here,he
was married in 1917 in carlisle to margaret gallagher ,his name is john edward pearson and he was age 22 and father thomas gas stoker.
on his death cert in 1945 he was 53 and gives his wife as informant of his death,how do i find out who his mother was as i cant find his birth,there are alot of pearsons in carlisleand i want to besure i have the right one,any help or advice on this one would be appreciated.

Do you believe he was born in Carlisle, or some distance away?

Hello Jean, what was the address for him on the marriage certificate, and who were the witnesses - there may be some clues in there.

If he died in 1945 age 53, he was born about 1892.
This is one of your problems.

Hi Jean, the age of that census would have fit his death record.

If 22 when married in 1917 implies b c1895. Death in 1945 age 53 implies birth c1892.

However, the father on the census found isn't a gas stoker (could have changed jobs?)

Jean - do you know the names of any brothers or sisters of your granddad?

There is a Thomas (William) Pearson, gas stoker in 1911. Lives in Yorkshire, and no son John

dont know of any of his siblings,and yes i suppose he could of changed jobs,pearson poulation in carlisle is unreal,

never realised about the age,why two different ages for death and marriage, the info i have is definetly right as margaret gallagher were my nan

Jean, it's strange but true - there is often variations in ages.

Which ever (If either) age for John is accurate then he was younger than his bride. It was certainly not unknown for either party of a marriage to "Adjust" their age to suit the circumstances. In this case I think it possible that John may have reduced his true age so that the age gap looked less. As his wife registered his death I would be inclined to think that that shown on his death certificate was likely to be the correct one.

Do you know whether John served during WW1?

will have to send to hexham for birth cert and see if it turns out the right john and thomas,major headache or what, thanks to everyone for your kind help on this one :-)
