Only just seen your reply Derek.
I have been digging around all afternoon and really have not got any were.
Charles Thorntons birth was 1825 in Tissington according to census so if the marriage for James and Sophia on 23/10/1824 is correct then the christening record for Charles naming his mother as Mary is a puzzle.

If the marriage between James and Sophia is 1825 well I suppose again it is possible that his mother was Mary and Sophia was a second marriage but I just don't see it.

Like you say it is also possible that Sophia is also Mary but as far as I can see the name Mary is not used on any census.
I could send for the birth certificates for the younger of James and Sophia's children but I think it is a lot of expense and I may not find out any more than I know already
Emet is such an unusual surname I thought I would have no problem finding Sophia's christening record even though it was in the London area but I can find none
Any way I just do not know were to take this now so I think I will have to leave it has it is and move on................for now !
Thanks again everyone
Kath

Hello Kath.......sometimes purchasing marriage certificates is the only way...but there were no "Certificates" as such before 1837. It is possible to purchase copies of Marriage entries before 1837..but will only give you the Father's name..so you're no further forward..
As part of my Derbyshire Thread work, i often go to Matlock Records Office.where I will find the Tissington records......which may or may not provide the answer..........I'll let you know in due course.

Derek.

Thank you Derek really appreciate your help.
Thank you for offering to look at Matlock record office for me,I live in Wales so Derbyshire is just that bit too far to go hunting for information which may or may not be there
