I wondered if someone would be kind and throw some light on the above. Mary Ann was born about 1853 and married William Fletcher born about 1848 in Preston Lancashire and married at The Holy Trinity Church Preston 1877 or 1878. On Lancs.b.m.d there are two records for the marriage but both have the same reference of 249/1/39 and I don’t know which year is correct. I know all about William Fletcher but nothing about Mary Ann. According to Lancs. b.m.d two Mary Ann’s were born in Preston 1845 and 1849 but I don’t know which is mine. The parents of William are Thomas Fletcher and Nancy Archer. Many thanks. Pat

Age 24 in 1878 doesn't fit either of those possible births you mention if the age is correct - it would make her born 1853/4.
Do you have her in census following the marriage? Where are she and William?

I would favour the illegitimate birth, as there is NO census record for a Robert Garnett, Licensed Victualler.
The Garnett/Harrison child’s father was George

Many thanks for all your help. I know nothing about the Garnett side of the family so will look into that. According to the census for 1891 Lillie Fletcher was born in 1886 and the 1901 census says 1888. This is my grandmother and she was actually born in Preston 12/04/1887. Once again your help is appreciated. Pat. P.s I’m surprised with the addition of Jessie M C McKennie aged 4 born in Chorley as a boarder on the 1901 census as the name doesn’t ring any bells and why would a 4 year old be a boarder. Where are her parents? Another quandary for me to look into. Pat.

Use freebmd / GRO to determine when birth registered and allow for wrong ages being given when census recorded.
eg. Year born come from a person saying I/ he /she is aged 6, so 1891 - 6 = 1885 but could just as easily have been born in 1884
FLETCHER, LILLIE GARNETT GRO Reference: 1887 J Quarter in PRESTON Volume 08E Page 644
So born anytime between mid February and late June.

No help with why Jessie McKenna was with the Fletchers in 1901 - but just for interest - - - -
Her father died in September 1902.
DEATH OF A NOTED FOOTBALLER William ("Billy") M'kenna, a well known footballer, died after a brief illness at Chorley at the age of 35 years. Originally a member of a Glasgow team, he was transferred to the Preston North End in 1891, playing forward when the team was at its best. He subsequently joined the Darwen, and later the Chorley team, with which he played for several years. He was also a reservist in the Black Watch. He was much respected. He leaves a widow and two children. Manchester Evening News; 19 Sept 1902.
Jessie was back with her mother by 1911. Her mother had remarried in 1903:

Thank you ArgyllGran. Lillie Fletcher married into the Woan family. Maybe Jessie’s mother was a friend of the family and they were just helping out in a time of need. Families were know to take in friends family. I’ve looked at all the census you have sent and none of the names are known to me so I’m giving up on Jessie. Thanks for all the help. Pat.
