Hi all
xxx

a lovely sunny day here :-D :-D

it has been a gorgeous weekend

and "my" ice hockey team finished the season on Saturday, top dog of the whole league, for the second year in a row.

They start the playoffs to the Cup on Wednesday ................ 4 playoff rounds, each best of 7 games.

Last year, "my" team went all the way to the very last game of the last playoff round, and lost

Playoffs go on into June

Dea,
i think the idea is to improve your muscle strength which in turn helps protect your bones have a look at this site

Cyn,

Some people are born to greatness, others have greatness thrust upon them. Some have a dog named after them.

C'est la vie.

Good morning all,

The sun is actually shining at the moment :-D

I will have the cheese and onion tarts please with extra bacon on top and home-fried potatoes with garlic and bacon for breakfast please.

Thank you Sylvia <3

Got to go and get grand-daughter soon so I need lots of energy ;-)

Thank you for that web link Linds it is very useful - I will study it further when grand-daughter has gone home.

It would seem that I will not be exercising to strengthen my bones but to strengthen the muscles around them to give them support! - That makes a lot more sense - I DO wish people would say exactly what they mean in the first place and then I wouldn't get confused ;-)

See you all later,

Hi Dea,

"Weight bearing exercise"

I think the reason this phrase is used is because scientists doing detailed monitoring of astronauts found that long trips in space in weightlessness meant that their bone density decreased.

I roughly translate osteoporosis as meaning pores or holes in the bones - I bet that is not correct, but it gives an image I find helpful. Apparently the calcium ions diffuse out of the bones.

You need to find some way of persuading the bones to recapture the calcium.

There is a lot of calcium in milk (osteoporosis has been linked to women growing up in thirties Britain without regular access to milk) and also in green leafy vegetables - but just making the calcium available is only half the battle.

I was visiting a drug firm in the early nineties who were in the process of developing a drug to help "fix" the calcium and halt the osteoporosis; but trials had shown that just playing golf was more effective than taking the drug.

The scientists believed the reason that golf playing was effective was that walking (unlike swimming) requires the skeleton to bear the weight of the body during exercise.

This is all just anecdotal, so would need checking out, but I hope that it fits with your other reading and helps to visualise what you need to do?
