Irene

..... she's my mother

that was a "calling card" type picture that my aged aunt gave me about 5 years ago.

I have no idea why Mum would have had such a thing ..... she did teach dancing at a local dancing school round about that time, and that is in fact how she met my dad

He went to the school for lessons

I have a photo of my grandmother taken about that time I stole it from someone elses tree, it is the one and only photo that I have ever seen of her looking reasonably attractive, They married on boxing day 1926 but there was a mix up with the photographer so no photos

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jan 2011 00:27

what a pity ja...x

My mum was a very attractive woman all her life, although she did put on a lot of weight as she got older

...... grandma Schofield was a little tub, almost as far round as she was tall when I knew her in the 40s and early 50s!

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jan 2011 00:30

I'm pretty certain that at the time that photo was taken Mum was engaged to a man who had gone to Canada for 1 year to make his money.

Then she met Dad, who pestered her for dates ( or so I was told).

Eventually, after 3 or so years, Mum decided the guy wasn't going to come back, broke off the engagement, and agreed to marry Dad

She met the man again in Manchester around 1955 or so .... he'd returned at the outbreak of WW2

......... he recognised her!

She was so shaken by meeting him again, that she told me all about it when she got home that day

Apparently, he'd sent her all kinds of gifts from Canada ....... she burnt them all the night before she married Dad

There probably are some photos of her that I hav'nt seen before at the parents house, but my dad had'nt seen this one before which looked like a studio back drop.

Well you should be glad your mum picked your dad sylv shame about the gifts though

Oh yes :(((

living here, I have an idea of what he sent her

she just mentioned beaded purse, and things like that

that probably means original First Nations things

and some of the work from that era is just gorgeous

She said it didn't feel right taking gifts from another man into her marriage

Shame sylv

I know husbands can get jealous of ex boyfriend gifts I have had things disapear over the years.

Back to old photos...I would really love some of my mums parents but not sure who would have them. When they died the two youngest were still at home so I would imagine one of them may have some unless they threw them away which would'nt surprise me.
There is a cousin on FB who I could contact but she does'nt know me and as the family do not speak dont want to start anything off, like meeting up for coffee ect.
Mum says she had seen a photo of her dad in his army uniform which would be nice to have as I cannot find any records for him.

I was'nt going to say anything but its been playing on my mind for the last few hours.
I think of you all as my friends even though we have never met

If I have upset anyone by anything I said today please pm me if you wish, but I have gone over it a few times and for the life of me cannot see anything to offend.
Maybe my use of the English language and gramma is not that great, but I know what I'm talking about if no one else does.

I've been off having dinner, etc.

I don't see where you said anything to upset anyone

.... but maybe Ginny thought it might not be a good idea to say so much about your daughter on this type of open forum

........ things get onto Google really fast from GR

I'm amazed at how fast things do get on there!

Morning all

Ja..x you didn't say anything to offend, I think Gins was just trying to look out for you and let you know we all care about you:-).

Sylvia, I would love to see your photos but I don't think we are friends on FB:-(.

Edit: if it was me I would contact my cousin and say I'm researching the family tree etc... And then hopefully get copies of family photos. My Mum was so upset when her brother died and left everything to his wife's family. She wasn't bothered about any money only that they would let her have family photos from when they were children.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 10 Jan 2011 07:22

we could be friends ...... if I knew your name and you knew mine!!

and if I knew how to do it!

My aunt-by-marriage burnt everything to do with her husband's family (my grandparents) after he died in 1991 .............. I left it for about 6 months before I wrote and asked her if there was anything.

She said she didn't think anyone was interested so she had burnt it all

............ I was the only grandchild still living, but she didn't ask me

so all my grandparents' photos, his WW1 medals etc etc were burnt. I can remember at least one photo of granddad in army uniform.

She then sent me some money "because Jack would have wanted it"

ah well .. it's water under the bridge now!
