All house owners are responsible for clearing the sidewalk across the front of their property ...... and also down the side if you are a corner lot (as w are). We also have to clear the path and steps to the front door ... the mailman may or will refuse to deliver mail otherwise.

If you are elderly, infirm or otherwise unable to do the clearing, you have to arrange for someone else to do the job.

I think someone was posting last year that that law in the UK had been changed or clarified ..... you are no longer liable for an accident if you made a bona fide attempt to clear the snow.

Owners of multi-unit dwellings also have to clear the sidewalks around their buildings ...... or arrange for someone to do it.

In practice, I think most complaints re uncleared sidewalks will be a reuslt of people phoning in and complaining .............. although city inspectors will also be out and about.

This new law was the result of a long spell last winter, several weeks when we had a long cold spell after a big snowfall. People did not clear their sidewwalks, and it became too dangerous for people to go out, especially elderly or people unsteady on their pins.

There is a fine for not clearing the snow.

It has always been the law for businesses and commercial buildings to clear their frontages ..... but it was just always the courteous thing to do in residential neighbourhoods.

Unfortunately, we've had a lot less snow in recent years, and many immigrants who do not know that they were expected to help out.

So, the city wrote up the new by-law.

Four houses out of the 7 in the block on our side of the street cleared their sidewalks in that cold spell last winter ................ all long time residents! The other 3 did nothing ...... need I say it?

We have some pretty good neighbours on both sides of the block that we are in, about half have been here a long time ............. and they clear each other's sidewalks if necessary!

If there does happen to be a stretch where there is no house, then of course no-one clears it .................. which does cause problems.

But Vancouver is pretty well built up, with not too much vacant land .............. most stretches without houses would be alongside parks, schools and such things ..... and those would or should be cleared anyway.

That's really interesting Sylvia - you are a very 'organised' lot in Vancouver aren't you ?

OOOhhh !! - It's the 12th today - I must be in a time wharp as I thought it was the 11th !!!

Oh well - that stewing beef I have just cooked to perfection tastes very nice, even though the bb date was the 11th !!!

That's not like me, I NEVER use food past the bb date !!!

It has been done in the pressure cooker for twice the normal time and so is VERY tender - I think at that temperature all the bugs will be killed ?????

Help here !! - Am I about to poison myself ??

I swear it was the 10th when I looked yesterday - I have lost a day somewhere!

(I will blame my grandson for whacking me on the head with his 'trusty' hammer !! (poor little mite - gets the blame for everything !!)
