Just seen this

Facebook announced on its developer blog late Friday evening that it would grant developers access to its members phone numbers and home address, provided that users agreed when installing the app. The announcement was made late at night when most journalists weren’t looking (or awake), but FoxNews.com eventually discovered it and asked Facebook why it made this change.

“We want to make it easy for people to take the information they’ve entered into Facebook with them across the web. This new permission gives people the ability to control and share their mobile phone number and address with the websites and apps they want to use,” a Facebook spokesperson replied.

Facebook quickly understood that this might anger people considering its already shaky track record on privacy. So rather than lump in this data with lists of permission pages that appear when adding a new application, Facebook plans to devise a better way to let users know that developers will be able to see their phone number and address. The company has not said exactly how it will do that, but it will temporarily disable access to personal contact information until the changes can be implemented.

You’re probably wondering why Facebook would even consider granting that type of information to third parties. It’s the same reason that magazines, banks, and other companies sell your information: they can make money. Facebook planned to let customers allow shopping sites to access member home address for checkout or receive deal alerts sent directly to their phone. Interesting, but it would be much wiser and safer to have that information entered manually during the sign-up process. Many people don’t read the full content of permission pages, and may not realize that they are surrendering such sensitive information.

Use this story as a reminder to always read permission requests for Facebook apps that you install.

nasty!

Just found this and thought it was priceless considering they use the site!

The chief executive of the parent company of UK's Friends Reunited has criticized Facebook's privacy settings & called for better protection of users data.

It's what a lie in does for me Cynthia:-))

I've already got the washing on, started making mince pies, trifle, and apple pie.

I'm doing "Christmas" dinner for the family over here. As you know we were in St Helens for the real Christmas so didn't spend time with my mother in law and when we were leaving she seemed a little upset. So I promised her that we would do it one weekend when we got back that fitted in with what she does for the church and tonights the night. So all the family descend on us tonight. Poor OH, all these goodies for him to ignore. I'll let him have Christmas pud though

Buy him a prezzie Toots, that may make up for the lack of food goodies!

A brief respite then off again..~~~~~~~~

Hope your Christmas cooking is all under control Toots - thanks for adding he message!

The reason why I asked is that I 'strayed' into 'bookmarks' which I don't usually use and I read this message:

"This is where you can keep a copy of your favourite threads. At the top of each thread you’ll see the option to bookmark them. You can bookmark your own threads or any others that are of interest to you. Tick the ‘watch’ column to receive an email letting you know that there are replies on your bookmarked threads. If want to bookmark a thread, but you don’t want to know about any new posts on it then just untick the ‘watch’ box. "

I don't know how long this message has been on there but it did seem to give the option of receiving an e-mail when something was added to a thread that you want to keep up with. - Quite a useful facility in some instances ?

However, it seems to be just another empty promise as I haven't received a message to say you have added.

Never mind, we are used to disappointment on this site!

It's a good job we are such a 'happy bunch' !!!

Christmas is under control, everyone arriving at 4.30pm Got nibbles, Xbox, Wii and PS3 at the ready and parental controls installed on laptops so that will keep the kids happy. Got out the board games for later. Looking to eat about 6pm

Pity the email didn't work because then we could have told everyone to bookmark the tread and they will receive an email alerting them to posts.

Back to the kitchen for me>>>>>>>>>>

Thanks Toots !

Perhaps, if you have a minute over the next week or two, you could tell me how to work those 'parental controls' please.

I have a 5 year old grand-daughter who is now very good on the computer and we would like to sort something out in this direction but we find that whatever controls we put on her, also apply to us.

We want to know how to apply the controls 'just to her'??

Absolutely no rush but I would appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Hi Fans - just went back a page and saw your message.

It is good that you can 'joke' about these things !! - NOT any easy thing to do but it does relieve the pressure !!

Such a hard thing to do - I am thinking about you (and bezzie!!)

It's a 'relief' thing - I remember as a young teenager, travelling in the funeral car to my gran's funeral who I loved to bits !! - I saw a woman in a silly hat, walking her dog which looked just like her - I giggled all the way to the church !! - I didn't mean to but it just 'got me' !
