Night Sylvs, sleep well - you must need that sleep after preparing that lovely brekkie. Thanks.

Jonesey, so you are not the mere strip of a lad one thought you to be ;)) Well done to your family - in so many ways. Actually, I think being a gt.grandfather will suit you; you will just need even more money to spoil the new arrival.

Finished dusting etc. having a break and then off for a shower.

Gins? Shouldn't you be on the way to work........???

Jonesey

That's wonderful news - gt grandfather - it is such a wonderful title

The hours people have spent searching for that very elusive name
does not bear thinking about

And you are one already

Brilliant !!

Morning Renes,

I won't inherit that title until the summer (God willing).

At least the little one will not have to spend many hours trying to discover who this one of his/her great grandfathers was, providing of course that my children/grandchildren do throw away the records that they will inherit when I pop my clogs.

I think I am very lucky in that I remember 2 of my great grandparents in my teenage years.
And my last grandparent only died 9 years ago.

I amonly 54 but could easily be a great grandparent in 10 years or so.

My Mum is a very fit and healthy 75 year old.

and as far as I know so is my Dad.

They could easily become great great grandparents.

Wonder what my Mum would say about that?

I only remember my Granny - and she died when I was 14 -- aged 84 years she was living with us at the time at --- a wonderful lady

Only recently I had a copy of the letter she wrote to her grandaughter in Denmark after the death of her mother ( my Grans daughter ) in 1954

I was overwhelmed at seeing my Grannys spidery writing - which I recognised immediately ---truly a treasured moment

You are very fortunate LK to have memories of Great Grandparents -

Jonesey Report 10 Feb 2011 12:20

Before I developed my interest in my ancestors I did not even know the names of my paternal grandparents. My father had left his birthplace in Sheffield during the great depression and spent the remainder of his life in the Midlands. I only remember meeting my paternal grandfather once and my paternal grandmother twice. They both died before I was 10.

Of my maternal grandparents, I only met my grandfather once as he was a long term patient in a mental institution (No his condition is not hereditary (lol)) but my maternal grandmother I knew very well as she lived with my mother up until she died in 1972.

As a result tracing her ancestry was very easy as her siblings (Born 1883~1901) were all very close to one another and maintained contact right up until they died one by one. Ironically the last one to die aged 95 in 1988 was the one of whom the doctor had told her mother shortly after she was born, "Don't get attached to this one, you will never rear her".

Because of having had no contact, tracing my paternal ancestors was not so easy particularly with them having the surname Jones. However with the help of others, GR members amongst them, I have so far traced the Jones line back to 1712. Along with the help I have encountered many wonderful people and enjoyed some amazing luck.

My quest these days is to discover descendants of the other 16 children that my 4xGt Grandparents had. So far I have found some of them living on every continent apart from Asia and Antarctica.

I'm not even a grandparent, not that I would want to be at the moment. I dont remember any gt grandparents although since doing this I think my mums gran died in 1967 but she had'nt seen her since she was a child so not sure.

My grandmother died in 1995 aged 91 and she was the only one who died a natural death...one suicide and two in a road accident all before I left school

You've reminded me Jonesey........my maternal grandfather was apparently pushed round in a wheelchair for the first few years of his life - don't know why though. He went on to become a Royal Marine, fought in the Boxer uprising and WW1 and died at the age of 94!

A friend of mine has a married daughter who is a doctor and an unmarried son. Neither look like producing any offspring in the near future. She would love grandchildren but is having to content herself with having a 'granddog'......lol

Renes, I know what you mean by seeing that handwriting.....I still get an odd feeling when I see my grandmother's writing on cards and suchlike.

Now, do I clean the car out or leave it to gather more mess????

jax Report 10 Feb 2011 13:55

My mum always said her father had lovely writing and wanted a reminder of it . When he died the only thing she wanted from her parents was a book she bought him some years earlier which he used for keeping his accounts as a scrap metal dealer

She got the book but her brother tore all the pages out first, think that may be one of many reasons why she does'nt want anything to do with her siblings anymore.

I'll second that Jax.

Apart from a few slaps delivered by FBG and occasional threats of assault with a cedar plank this is largely a non violent thread. Or it was until a couple of days ago when world war three looked as if it might be imminent. Happily the furore died quickly and the thread returned to its usual non violent, wacky old self.
