SylviaInCanada Report 11 Sep 2011 20:38

we were supposed to leave Vancouver for the UK on September 12, 2001.

Instead, there were 110 planes on the tarmac at Vancouver airport ........... 34 diverted there on 9/11, and the rest unable to take off as planned. Over 8,500 passengers were being "housed" in various places. The planes were lined up cheek by jaw ..... it was the most incredible sight to see so many big passenger jets all at once.

I do remember one quite scary moment ................ we were sitting in our local coffee shop on the afternoon of 9/11 when all h*** broke loose as an F18 fighter screeched right overhead, heading towards the airport.

Turned out that one airliner (Chinese, I believe) had not responded to certain commands, so two fighter planes were scrambled form the Canadian base on Vancouver Island, and escorted it into Vancouver Airport, just in case.

You cannot believe the noise those things can make unless you are sitting less than 500' below them!

Incredibly, the passengers on all but one of the diverted planes did not know a) they were being diverted, b) why they were being diverted, or c) where they were going. Some of them were not even told after they landed ........... not until they were de-palned (often many hours after landing) did they find out they were in Vancouver, and why.

One passenger reported that he knew it wasn't San Francisco when he saw the mountains, but he couldn't think where it was!

Only one pilot told his passengers exactly what was happening, and why.

We did manage to re-book our tickets, and left on the Friday (the 14th, I believe).

Jonesey Report 11 Sep 2011 21:17

I was at work in my shop and my eldest son rang me as he was watching events unfold on television. A few years earlier we had both stood on the roof of the South tower. I have numerous pictures taken whilst on there, you could see for miles as the observation platform had an ordinary low level railing which allowed an unrestricted view.

I still find it hard to conceive how something so seemingly solid could collapse in such a short space of time.

Sylvia, There was a documentary on UK satellite television last night that was very moving. It was made by two brothers (Possibly French Canadian) who were making a film charting the progress of a new recruit in the FDNY based at a fire house near to the towers. As fate would have it one of the brothers was accompanying the fire chief when the first plane struck so they immediately went to tower one. A lot of the footage was shot inside the lobby of the building as numerous fire crews arrived and assembled in preparation to ascend. Most of those men seen in the shots lost their lives although miraculously all of the 50 crew who were based at the fire house where the recruit was stationed survived.

The shots inside the building as it began to disintegrate were amazing and the courage of those who remained inside trying to help others was beyond belief.

Sylvia-I got a laugh out of the passenger who knew it wasn't San Francisco but had no idea where it could be. The first time OH and I flew to SF the plane was either stopping at or going on to LA/Ontario CA airport. To his terminal embarrassment Mike thought the plane was detouring to Canada.

So many tears out there today. OH's cousin Tom (Reinig).

Mo

I know of Ontario, CA ...... we had friends who lived near there, and that was the airport if we wanted to fly to see them. We always drove!

Sorry about your OH's cousin xxxxx

Jonesy .... those brothers were French-Canadian. They ended up with a very moving documentary. One of them got the shot of the first plane hitting the tower ...... he heard a noise, turned round, looked up, and automatically lifted his camera, which was still filming.

I heard a very moving documentary on the radio one morning last week .................. about a girl in Grade 7 (so about 12) in one of the 20 or so elementary and middle schools in Manhattan. Her school was 2 blocks from the towers.

No-one seems to have bothered much with the trauma these kids had ............... she and her friends were released by the school to walk home alone past all the devastation, hearing and seeing literally everything, including the people jumping.

She was finally diagnosed with PTSD 2 years ago ................ after years of being given various drugs for depression, AD, becoming an alcoholic, etc.

Hi all hope you are well.Fans I am sorry for this difficult time for you...

Jonesy I watched the documentary last night and it was very sad..a lot of the footage I had not seen it before. On a personal note it is a bit hard to watch those stories sometimes..both myself and partner are firefighters and if he has been called out, particuarly when it is very bad I worry all the time...Black Saturday was probably our equivalent in terms of shock and trauma.

It is such an awful time, but I can't but be inspired by the bravery of the people who gave erevything they had, the ones that got left behind and those who are managing to still live with it all. My heart goes out to each of them. I don't know if that came out right ...

Am at home for the next few days, my daughter has come down with a bad case of tonsilitis so lots of cuddles and tlc for her! I actually thought she had a stomach bug as she was sick at 4 o'clock this morning, but the dr said said that is what it was...

Hope you are all well and having a good weekend :-)

I am glad you put some bacon quiche tarts in there Sylvia 'coz that gready Ginns ate every last bit of the other two !!!

Lovely breakfast again - thank you <3

Gracie, I know what you mean about the ones who are left behind when these awful tradgedies happen and your opinion is all the more poignant coming from someone who is herself a 'firefighter' and liable to be called to deal with such situations.

You and your daughter seen to be having a pretty rough time of it lately - are you sure there is nothing 'bothering her' and causing all these symptoms?

Hope she gets better soon.

Morning most - night Sylvs!

Mo - it must be a very sad and subdued atmosphere where you are at the moment. Very understandable. <3

I saw the re-run of the planes hitting the towers twice yesterday and I still sat shellshocked. I remember when we watched it live on tv - we couldn't take in what was actually going on. We went and stood in the peace of our garden and I remember the sun was shining and the birds were twittering and we tried to make sense of what was going on in the US. We failed miserably.

Sylvs, I would say thank you for breakfast but that Gins has snaffled the lot. Don't know what Dea will say :-S

Rooting about for some toast bread......sigh

Grace, I meant to say about your little girl - do hope she improves soon - she seems to be going through quite a rough spell at the moment doesn't she? Lots of TLC to you both.
