Will be picking up little 6 year old grand-daughter from school tomorrow and have to rush across to take her to a school on the other side of town where she will be 'representing her school' in a 'Cross Country Festival' !!!

Not quite as grand as it sounds - they seem to have to volunteer rather than be 'selected', but anyway, I am really proud of her - she says that almost all the other 'volunteers' are boys !!

She is growing up Soooo quickly, I can't believe it !!

Granddaughter going to a fashion show tonight. We picked up her stuff from home after school, and when we arrived back here, she showered and got ready. When dad came for them, she primped her way out of the house hitching up the back of her jeans as she shimmied down the path.........so grown up and funny......and oh so cute!

They do grow up quickly unfortunatly Dea

My two are 19 and 14 and it was quite nice today to speak to the elder one who wanted a day trip to London saturday but had no one to go with.
I suggested she asked her sister and she said "thats a good idea I think I will she will enjoy that" well that did surprise me as they are always fighting but now they are both getting to an age where they have something in common.....shopping, but they will still probably fight.

Cross country is'nt that running? did that once at school had to stop because I needed a fag lol

Sylvia she ain't worth the bother. As you have most probably already seen I suggested we just ignore each other and yet she carries on spouting. Perhaps she is hoping for a retaliation but she won't get it from me.

I don't care what her opinion of me is. I would be more upset if I had upset anyone from this thread and others on the FB page Of course she ain't going to like me because I asked GR directly about lookups on their FB page and they agreed that that was not the purpose of the page. She thinks I bullied GR when in fact I put a rational argument which they agreed with otherwise they would not have agreed. I will just ignore her.

Can knit

Can cook basic things but make a mean roast lamb dinner

Can't sew to save my life. In sewing class at school the teacher just tutted and shook her head. Never ever used the sewing machine in school, just unpicked things. Took it home and Sis would run whatever it was in an hour. To avoid wasting material Sis would cut pattern at home. She was really good. She would buy a pattern and material on a Saturday morning an run it up and wear it to go out in that evening.

My friend's husband's funeral is next Wednesday so will have to do a shuffle re the school run.

I used to be really good at sewing .......... made my own things from very young.

The first dress I made was in a school sewing class. I was 9-10. The next year (last year of elementary) I made a dress ......... it had a separate bodice and skirt, bodice had set-in sleeves, skirt had 5 hand-sewn rows so that it could be gathered on to the bodice. I hated doing those gathering rows ................. I had to undo them so many times because the teacher insisted that every stitch be the same length

Next year, I went to Grammar School .............. did Cookery the first year, and Mum had to make the full-cover apron that I would have had to make if I'd been assigned to sewing. It was a very simple pattern!

Did have Sewing Class in 2nd year ............. we made pyjamas. The teacher used the same pattern for everyone in the class. I was one of the tallest ......... the legs ended at mid-calf, the arms at mid-forearm. The shortest girl walked on the legs of her pyjamas.

Mum literally cried when I took the finished product home

Luckily, there was a lot of material left over .............. so we added pieces to the legs and arms!

I even learnt how to do some tailoring when I went to work on Saturdays at the same dress shop where Mum worked .....................I was just about 12 then, and they assigned me to help in the "sewing room" where they did alterations, and made clothes.

That was where I managed to run the sewing machine needle right through the nail on my left forefinger!

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Mar 2011 19:36

Do you know Dea, I can't remember. I think it did ........ all I can remember is sitting there and looking at the needle in my finger!

................. and I'd been using a sewing machine for several years by that point

Needless to say, didn't go to the doctor .................... someone put a bandage on it, then warned that I'd better not get any blood on any of the dresses!
