Ohhh - Cynths - I will be thinking of you on Wednesday !!

Does your friend know yet ??

I have probably said this before many times but I once took a group of people over to Spain for a holiday and we had something lik an 10 hour delay at the airport.

Looking for my passengersdto make sure they were ok. - I came across a lovely lady who obviously had dementia - she had such a sweet childlike smile!

She had no idea that she had been stuck in the airport for such a long time and said to me 'I have had SUCH a lovely day - what are we to do tomorrow - much the same ???

All through the week, she smiled so sweetly - she hadn't a clue what was going on and her husband looked after her dutifully (and lovingly).

It sounds like your friend will be much the same ??

Better for her that she doesn't have to suffer the pain of her loss.

Just 'be with her' and hold her hand.

That is such a lovely thing that you can do for your friend.

But actually, that time in the "sewing room" is where I discovered that I had what is now sometimes called "latent lefthandedness".

I had an uncle who was completely ambidextrous, and I already knew at 12 that I could use my left hand more than most people. For example, if I'm dusting or washing a wall or window .............. I don't move my body, I just switch the duster from my right hand to my left hand. I can reach twice as far as most people that way!

But they taught me how to do a tailored hand-sewn hem on a heavy coat ........ at first someone would begin it, then hand it over to me to finish. But they then left me to do one on my own.

I got into the most horrible mess you can imagine ....................... one of the women then realised that I had started sewing the hem as a left hander would have done but I was then trying to sew as a right hander!

I've done the same thing when making an evergreen Christmas wreath

It means that I have to sit and consciously think about how to start such things ........ or I automatically start "left handed"!

Some people on here who are not quite so old as us might be intersted to know what used to happen to 'left-handed' people not quite so long ago.!!

My brother was born in 1946 and he was left-handed.

When he went to school it was 'frowned-upon' and the teachers used to tie his left hand behind his back and force him to use his right hand!!

This led to all sorts of problems and eventually he started to have nightmares and to sleepwalk. One day, in his sleep, he fell down the stairs and (I don't understand the technicalities of it), he ended up with a stammer which has affected his whole life !!

Makes you think doesn't it ???

Makes you think...bullying Dea

Both my boys eat with the knife (Kneef) in the 'wrong' hand...how odd

Never bothered me....you are what you are

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Mar 2011 20:15

definitely makes you think, Dea

J and I were talking about this last week ........ it really looks as though MJ is lefthanded. He has reached first for things with his left hand since the early days. Now it is more pronounced.

Fortunately, things are much better these days ...... they'll just have to make sure that they get left handed "tools" for him!

I forgot all about the embroidery!

I used to do a lot of that when I was younger, and started again about 5 years ago ....... still working on that small piece!

Mum did the most beautiful crochet ...... I've never managed to do any more than chain stitch around the edge of a knitted item or piece of material! I jsut don't seem to have the knack.

well, of course many many Americans have the knife in their left hand

They are taught to eat with the fork only. The fors is in their right hand, they change fork to left hand, pick up the knife to cut meat or whatever, put it down, change the fork back to their right hand, pick up the food, and eat it

Many don't bother with that cumbersome method .... just pick up the knife in their left hand and cut the meat.

I can't count the number of times that we were told when in Texas "How do you eat with both knife and fork?"

We were almost a side show at times!

Some clever folk on here then.........make their own patterns, tailoring...sheesh.......I can only crochet. BUT I am ace at jigsaws!

I too am ambidextrous Sylvs and do a lot of things more easily with my left hand. My dad was the same and my son is totally left handed.

Dea, that happened to someone I know...he has the most horrendous stammer now. Dreadful to be treated like that.

jax Report 30 Mar 2011 20:24

I could crochet once upon a time.

I wish I was left handed now my sister is and both my husbands sisters were. My dad thinks he may have started out left handed but as you say Dea forced to use the right one.

I think its strange we use our fork in our left hands but trying to use a spoon in that hand is awkward

OH always laughs at me

I never use a pattern as printed!

when sewing ........ I take the skirt from one, sleeves from another, etc. I can "see" in my mind what I want to achieve.

when knitting .............. I have a couple of standard patterns that I like for the ease of knit-up, shape, fit, etc. But I then adapt them ........... use different stitches, make up designs for the front of them. Like Fans, I use graph paper to design my own pictures.

and now I spend almost all my leisure time on the computer!

Syl

I qualified as NNEB years ago of course, and I seem to remember that left/right can be detected as early as 8 months

But.... it can change when the child reaches 2/3 years

Hmmm....my American psychologist tutor.. that I used to have many a spat!

And:

You're so right Sylv about the US eating, my mom was so not happy with us eating like 'her'....

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Mar 2011 20:39

Gins

that is interesting ................ that your Mum didn't want you eating like her

I've seen kiddies over here try to eat like "us", and their mothers have made them eat American

Ooooooo,jigsaws...Yep I do those too,on dark wet winter nights, but must be over at least a 1000 pieces or they get done too quickly and I get bored.

My paternal nan gave me a love of them.
Mother does them too,but finding it more difficult now of course due to the parky.

TootyFruity Report 30 Mar 2011 20:56

I am ambidextrous in most things but prefer to write with my left hand but can write with both. However I use a screwdriver in my right. Also someone gave me some left handed scissors but I couldn't use them I prefer to use my right hand.

I have two hands so if I can do it with one then with a little practice I should. be able to do it with both

Cynthia

Cynthia Report 30 Mar 2011 20:56

I agree. Got to be over 1,000 for same reason. It was my paternal grandma who got me started too! Got loads of em in the attic but, like Sylvs, the computer has taken over nowadays.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 30 Mar 2011 21:06
