Okay, the penny has finally dropped. Got the CJ wall thing. Nah, don't like it. Unnecessary. Not my style. Each to their own. Prefer trying to be nice to people - even when they wind me up. If it doesn't work, I holler in private. Just call me boring..................... :(

But then............I'm basically a happy little bunny despite all my probs and have been told I spread happiness, so maybe I'm not so boring after all.......lol

Gins......that's for those with a slight hangover - you could always have two of them!!!

Jonesey Report 2 Apr 2011 11:10

Many thanks for the anniversary wishes.

Fanny's memory has not completely gone after all. It is indeed 43 years since that fateful day when I swapped my mothers cooking for that of another fine woman.

Remember those good old days back then, when the main reason you chose a wedding date in March was because you could then claim an income tax rebate for the whole of the tax year just ending. Quite useful when you had very little money and loads of things to spend it on.

During the first few years of our married life the birthday, Christmas and anniversary presents exchanged between us were by necessity of a practical nature rather than a romantic one. I remember that for Christmas one year I bought the wife a dining table and she bought me 4 chairs to go with it. Carpet for the stairs comprised of 2x 12' wide x 10" long strips purchased as "Ends of roll" from the local market. We cut these into 14 pieces each about 20" long and nailed them on to the "Going" of each stair. Not pretty but they helped to keep the noise down. On other occasions I gave my wife a fridge for her birthday and she gave me a lawnmower for mine.

I may be wrong but I suspect that one of the reasons that some more recent marriages seem to fail relatively quickly is because those couples may not have had to share such experiences which may have helped to add to the bond between them.

Today we live in a much more materialistic society where it appears that some people believe that they should have all the luxuries of life on day one rather than when they can afford them. That puts additional pressure on their relationship which has really only just begun and may take many years to fully develop. Don't get me wrong however, I am as materialistic as the next man but if it came to a choice between getting rid of the 42" plasma Tv or the wife, the Tv would be the one to go.

After all the Tv can't cook my favourite meal but the wife can.

FannyByGaslight Report 2 Apr 2011 11:39

I am totally in agreement with you Mr Jones...I still have a very good relationship with No 2 sons father due to the fact that we really struggled to put a home together, and I do think it is because we shared the hard times and now can to some degree share the better times.
We bought only practical presents for each other and any presents from others had to be of a practical nature also or we asked for them to be taken back and exchanged for something useful, like a set of cutlery or something..Or even better power tools due to the nature of the business we started...
We seperated for a reason that was not because we stopped loving each other or did not get on,but I will not go into that on here.....

Only thing is Mr Jones my mother would have your guts for garters if she were your wife(lucky for you she is not.!)
THE wife is not to be used in her hearing as she is not an object,it has to be MY wife.
Dad is never to be heard calling her anything but MY wife or else..

Edits....I do hope you and Mrs Jones had a lovely day.......

Awww - How very sweet Jonesey ! - I hope your wife is reading this.

Mind you, given the same choice, I wonder if your wife would keep the TV ?? (tee hee).

I do agree with you though - we 'struggled' financially for many years and everything we achieved, we achieved together and gained a great deal of pleasure from even the smallest things.

Even when we moved to this house, 30 years ago, it was such a big step up from our previous one that we did not have money for carpets and curtains etc for a very long time. We only had curtains at the bedroom window for the first 6 months or so and then we were bought some for the lounge by my mum for Christmas. The rest we did 'step by step' as the idea of getting into debt has always frightened me.

We saved up for everything and then when we had the money we would buy the next thing we needed. It does though, as you say, help to build that 'bond' between you over the years.

We did the same thing on the stairs as you with those strips of carpets and I remember, in our very first house we also bought some 'end of rolls' for the lounge which my husband and I fitted together and put down. Now, that was a TRULY 'bonding experience !!!

He bought a large tub of 'bostick' glue and we used it to bond the strips of carpet together, then we sealed all around the edges to stop them from fraying............ It took several hours but the result was worthwhile.

However, when we tried to stand up and look at it, we realised that we were both 'high' on the glue fumes............ We laughed about it later but it was not very pleasant at the time.

We had to almost crawl out of the room and up the stairs to the bedroom where we closed the door and opened all the windows to let in air and we stayed in bed for the rest of the day, recovering............. I think that may have led on to another 'bonding experience' but I don't think I will go into that one on here (tee hee).!!!

Happy days! Happy memories! Happy Life together !

I wish everyone else could share the same.

I agree with you about going through tough times together. It does make a relationship stronger.

No wonder my marriage did'nt work, I cannot ever remember going through tough times. We had debts eg Loans and credit cards but nothing we could not afford to pay back.
He went through tough times after I left so it goes to show he needed me to hold the purse strings

Congrats to all those who made it past one "life sentance" though
